The black-and-white colonial houses still stand, but since its 2007 revamp, Dempsey has transformed into a swoon-worthy haven of bistros, boutiques and family-friendly spots – just minutes from Orchard Road. And here's the cherry on top: HSBC cardholders can enjoy exclusive perks while they’re at it, from discounts and return vouchers with every spend to curated experiences that elevate your day out. The ultimate guide to Tampines

The ultimate guide to Tampines

Let's rewind to where it all began. The World Habitat Award-winning area we now know as Tampines is named after the Tempinis tree, a type of timber tree that was once abundant in the district. No matter how you pronounce it – both ‘tam-pee-knees’ or ‘tam-pe- knees’ are acceptable, ‘tam-pines’ definitely isn’t – Tampines is the beast in the east that draws the crowds with its shopping malls, 24-hour eateries and lifestyle destinations. And if it’s tranquillity you’re seeking, Tampines Eco Green is just a stone’s throw away. RECOMMENDED: Ultimate guide to Singapore's neighbourhoods and the ultimate guide to Pasir Ris

Nost

Nost

Here’s a cocktail bar that wears its heart on its sleeve – and that sleeve happens to be an old-school one from the 90s. Nestled on the third floor of a shophouse along Ann Siang Road, Nost (short for nostalgia) is a cosy, dimly lit gastrobar that channels throwback charm with shelves of knick-knacks, comforting small plates, and a drinks list that reads like your teenage diary – sweet, complex, and just a little dramatic. The vibe  There’s a homely, unpretentious feel to the space, made for unhurried catch-ups and confessional heart-to-hearts over low lighting and lo-fi beats. The neon-lit Nost sign also adds a bold, photo-worthy glow to the space. And if you spot a guy in a cowboy hat slinging drinks behind the bar, that’s Keith – ask him for a recommendation and he’ll surprise you. The food  The menu is small but mighty. There’s the roti jagung ($12), a soft, house-made cornbread that’s super moreish. For something heavier, the gyrados ($16) features cured red snapper in a soy reduction – a spin on the classic Cantonese dish regularly seen during family dinners. But the real scene-stealer here is the brownie – fudgy, decadent, and served with the kind of reverence usually reserved for first loves. You’ll want to curl up in a corner and savour it slowly. The drinks  Expect carefully constructed cocktails that double as memory triggers. Take the Careless Whisper ($25), for example, a savoury-sweet sipper that channels a salad with balsamic vinegar, black pepper, and olive oi
Brooklyn

Brooklyn

4 out of 5 stars
Brooklyn Bar brings the grit, groove and soul of the New York City borough right into the heart of Ann Siang. With its graffitied walls, booming hip-hop, and unapologetically bold street eats, the bar is a living, breathing mixtape of Biggie beats and bourbon-soaked brilliance. The vibe  You’ll spot it from the get-go: the Pink Panther chilling by the entrance like it runs the place. And honestly, you’ll want in on it too, which is why you’ll end up pushing through the doors without a second thought.  Inside, it’s a full-on East Coast immersion – brick walls, subway-style lighting, framed black-and-white photos of Brooklyn natives Biggie and Jay-Z, and hand-drawn murals of Miles Morales’ Spider-Man by co-owner and resident hip-hop head Mark Thomas, who spent two years soaking up the NYC streets before bringing it all back home. The booths give you your little pocket of privacy, but the main bar is the soul of the space, flanked by three arches – a loving nod to the Brooklyn Bridge. Mirrors treated to look aged give off that lived-in, streetwise charm. It's got that comforting ‘come-as-you-are’ spirit, where hip-hop anthems echo off the walls and spontaneous debates about Kendrick Lamar versus Drake spark between strangers. When asked if he only plays East Coast hits, Mark admits that he finds himself squeezing in some West Coast and Southern rap, as well as contemporary remixes of classics by the likes of Frank Sinatra. What we truly love is the community feel here. There are

MOGĀ

MOGĀ

Hidden behind a nondescript wooden sliding door at Pullman Singapore Hill Street, MOGĀ is your gateway to a glimmering Tokyo back-alley fantasy. This sultry speakeasy takes its cues from the 1920s prohibition era in Japan, with all the decadence and none of the rules. Think rich leather banquettes, a bar stocked with rare Japanese spirits, and beats that bump till late. The vibe  Step inside and feel the world melt away. MOGĀ brings out two different worlds – retro glamour and underground mischief – all wrapped in warm lighting and moody vibes. The space is lush yet intimate, with just enough edge to feel like you’ve stumbled into a secret the cool kids have been gatekeeping. Whether you’re out to impress a date or just catching up with your post-work crew, the energy here morphs with the hour – laidback at lunch, electrifying after dark. The food  Modern izakaya plates headline the menu. These are designed for sharing, but you’ll be tempted to hoard. Kick things off with the MOGA Samurai Roll ($32), a decadent medley of prawn tempura, fresh yellowtail, creamy avocado and house-made sriracha yuzu aioli that hits all the spots: crispy, creamy, zesty and rich. Then there’s the chicken karaage ($18), a crowd-pleasing staple elevated with tangy karashi mayo and a punchy tonkatsu dip on the side.  For an East-meets-West indulgence, the A4 wagyu sando ($45) is stacked with tender wagyu, house-made coleslaw, teriyaki hollandaise, and sweet onion confit for that rich, umami-loaded bi

This luxury hotel has themed family suites with slides – here's what we think

What do Bruno Mars, Ayumi Hamasaki, and I have in common? We’ve all stayed at Mandarin Oriental Singapore – though I’m fairly sure I was the only one flinging myself down a jungle-themed slide here.  Fresh from a six-month revamp, this Marina Bay icon is looking exceptional than ever. Gone are the old beige tones, replaced with pink-and-green palettes inspired by Singapore’s Garden City charm, plush interiors drawing from Peranakan heritage, art commissioned by local and regional creatives, and a sophisticated new look that still retains its luxurious roots. Add to that some of the best service in town and you’ve got a hotel that nails both polish and personality. Photograph: Mandarin Oriental Singapore Why stay at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore?  Since 1987, MO Singapore (formerly The Oriental Singapore) has been making guests feel like a VIP before even hitting the check-in desk, from the warm greetings by staff to the plush interiors that smell faintly of fresh flowers and quiet opulence. Whether you’re here for a romantic weekend, a luxe city staycay, or – like me – a family-friendly getaway with all the trimmings, MO Singapore doesn’t disappoint. It’s got the vibe of a resort, the heart of a five-star hotel, and the location of your urban dreams. And if you’re looking to explore the city in style, it has just the thing for you. One of the hotel’s biggest flexes is the Porsche Drive Experience, where guests can book a sleek electric Porsche for up to three hours. Whether

Singapore Botanic Gardens is having its first-ever light show from now till August 10

Singapore’s oldest garden is putting on a brand-new kind of show – and it’s lit. For the first time in its 166-year history, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is setting the scene for a nightly light show, from now till 10 August 2025. Photograph: NParks From 7.30pm to 10pm, EnlighTEN @ Singapore Botanic Gardens turns the UNESCO World Heritage Site into an after-dark wonderland. Expect dreamy light installations dotted across the park’s most iconic corners, from a glowing Tanglin Gate and a twinkling Bandstand, to a softly lit Swan Lake that looks straight out of a fairytale. Even the Clock Tower at Orchid Plaza and Palm Court near Nassim Visitor Services Centre are getting their time to shine. A treat for the senses, the light show is also set to orchestral pieces by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), making it the perfect backdrop for post-dinner strolls and photo ops. Photograph: NParks The light show is part of a huge milestone year for the Gardens, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of its UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription, 150 years of the Singapore Herbarium and Botany Library, 30 years of the National Orchid Garden, and – no biggie – Singapore’s 60th year of independence.  And as part of the nationwide SG60 festivities, the Gardens is pulling out all the stops, including the Singapore Botanic Gardens Heritage Festival and the SGF Orchid Show, both running from July 19 to 27. Apart from the stunning orchid displays, the festival lineup also includes live m

If you’ve noticed flurries of excited fans camping out at W Singapore Sentosa Cove or Conrad Singapore Marina Bay, you’re not alone. Arsenal, AC Milan and Newcastle United have officially arrived in Singapore for the much-hyped Singapore Festival of Football. The star-studded squads touched down over the weekend, and fans wasted no time turning up at the hotels, hoping to score autographs, selfies, or even a wave from their favourite football stars. Arsenal were the first to land on July 20, flying in fresh from their summer training camp in Marbella with a 30-man squad in tow. The buzz was immediate – think long queues, chants, and a sea of red outside the team’s Sentosa base. AC Milan, meanwhile, had fans exercising patience as the Italian side faced flight delays before eventually checking in at Conrad Singapore Marina Bay. Still, that didn’t stop die-hards from showing up early, some even armed with gifts for the players. Carabao Cup winners Newcastle United are the last to arrive, flying in just ahead of their big clash at the National Stadium – their first Singapore appearance since 1996. With all three clubs now in town, the stage is officially set.  Photograph: Singapore Festival of Football What is the Singapore Festival of Football? It's official: Singapore is home to one of the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the world

We knew it, and now the world does too. Singapore has officially landed a spot on Time Out’s list of the world’s most beautiful outdoor cinemas – coming in hot at 11th place, thanks to the stunning Hendrick’s Sunset Cinema. With its breezy beachfront setting at Tanjong Beach, pre-show live DJ show, coastal cuisine from nearby Tanjong Beach Club, immersive silent disco-style experience, and free-flow vibes, it’s no surprise this alfresco film affair always sells out. Top spot went to Sydney’s WestPac OpenAir – we’ll happily concede to a cinema with front-row views of the Opera House and that unbeatable Aussie sunshine. Photograph: Films At The Fort While this year’s edition of Hendrick’s Sunset Cinema has already wrapped, there’s good news for cinephiles craving that under-the-stars kind of movie magic. The team behind the seaside screenings is bringing back its sister event: Films At The Fort, an open-air cinema experience set against the lush, green backdrop of Fort Canning Park.  The event runs from August 21 to September 7, with a nightly lineup of acclaimed films and cult classics. This year’s buzz-worthy titles include The Life of Chuck, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, F1: The Movie, and all-time greats, including 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shawshank Redemption.
