What do you get when you combine a lifelong passion for pizza and a commitment to the freshest locally-sourced ingredients? A Lala’s Neapolitan-ish Pizza, fresh out of the wood-fired oven.  Founder Conor Cudahy has been infatuated with pizza for as long as he can remember. Since 2021, he and his team have served thousands of pizzas to customers from their 3,000 pound, wood-fired pizza oven. In 2023, they opened their first brick-and-mortar at Time Out Market in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston. From the dough to the toppings, every slice is made with intention, imagination and a whole lot of love. We sat down with owner Conor Cudahy to talk pizza, passion and what goes into making a perfect Neapolitan-ish slice.  Photograph: Courtesy Paige Harding Your passion for pizza goes way, way back. When did you finally decide to pursue your passion for pizza full-time?  Cooking has always been a hobby of mine. And I’ve always loved pizza. Prior to the pandemic, I was working as a Peace Corp volunteer in Malawi, and I was cooking everything with wood. I had made a wood-fired oven out of bricks and mud, and I got really good at baking. When I got back to the States, I was working a full-time remote job and had some extra time to continue to experiment with recipes and what not. I started developing a recipe for a pizza crust, and eventually decided to start a food truck.  We’d spend our weekends serving slices at breweries, music festivals, birthday parties, corporate events—anywhere we could pop-up. Because of pandemic restrictions, it was still a requirement that breweries served food if they wanted to serve alcohol, so there was a lot of demand for our product. This was a great way for us to get our name out there, get people to try our pizza, and get experience operating the business.  A couple years later, I was in the Market, and noticed that the pizza kitchen was empty so I decided to reach out and in January 2023 we opened.  How would you describe Lala’s pizza? What makes it Neapolitan-ish?  When I think about the perfect pizza, I think about the freshness of a Neapolitan pizza. The tomato sauce is fresh and vibrant, the cheese is cooked well, and the crust is crispy. We take that and combine it with elements of New York and American pizza, and you have Lala’s.  Do you have a favorite pizza on the menu?  We’re actually in the process of swapping out a few menu items with some flavors for the summer and fall. We’re working on this vodka sauce pizza, and in recipe testing that’s been my favorite. I can’t wait for people to try it.  For those folks who have never tried Lala’s, what would you recommend they try first? Is there a “signature” Lala’s pizza?  Oh, definitely the ‘Hot Johnny.’ That pizza has been on our menu since day one and it hits every single time. We take a classic margherita base of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and basil, and take it up a notch with pepperoni and a drizzle of hot honey. I’m going to ask you a few questions and I want you to answer the first thing that comes to mind. Ready?  Let’s do it.  First question. Pineapple on pizza? Yay or nay?  I love a sweet and salty flavor combo. Like, the concept makes sense, but pineapple on pizza is just a little too weird for me.  I think I can guess the answer, but thin crust or thick crust?  I’m a thin crust guy, all the way.  Fold it or flat slice?  Definitely folded like a taco.  Red sauce or white sauce?  I actually think our cheese base pizzas are my favorite.  What’s the craziest topping combination you’ve tried that worked?  A while ago, we did a weekly collaboration with other kitchens at Time Out Market and we did one with Anoush’ella. It had kofta, red onion, jalapeño and their green sauce. It was like one of their wraps but on a pizza, and it was really, really good.  Lala’s Neapolitan-ish Pizza is located at Time Out Market Boston and open from 11am-10pm every day.

Time Out’s Drag Star Showdown was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of queer joy and self-expression, with a side of sequins and sass. Hosted by Time Out Market’s resident Drag Diva, Big Atlas, eight queens took the stage one by one to lip sync their hearts out and deliver showstopping runway looks.  The judges, who included RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 16 finalist Plane Jane and Boston’s “Singing Blonde Comedy Queen” Patty Bourée, ranked the queens based on criteria like originality and overall stage presence before announcing the two finalists who were asked to perform one final lip sync showdown to Lady Gaga’s “Vanish Into You.” But in the end, only one queen proved she had more than enough of the stuff to be crowned the winner. In fact, she had plenty. Describing her drag as “regal, radiant and relatable,” Landa Plenty’s drag is all about theatricality, joy and community. And while she may be new to the Boston drag scene, she proved that she’s certainly a force of fierceness to be reckoned with. “This competition felt like the perfect opportunity to step into the Boston scene and share a little Plenty with a new audience,” she said. “The performances I chose were all about storytelling and connecting. I wanted to showcase my range: from humor to glamor, from camp to concept. My runway look was a celebration of classic Plenty: elevated, polished and full of presence.”  Having been performing drag since 2007, Landa Plenty’s drag journey began at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, where she was cast in a production of Pierre Miravaux’s Island of Slaves. “That experience opened a door I never closed, and I’ve been exploring, evolving and expanding my drag ever since.”  When asked who or what inspires her drag, Landa Plenty says that she pulls inspiration from classic stage icons, bold fashion, and the resilience of queer communities. “I always want my audience to feel something - whether that’s empowered, entertained or just seen. There’s always a wink, a nod, and a whole lot of heart behind what I do,” she shared.  Being new to the Boston drag scene, Landa Plenty said it was overwhelming to hear her name called as the winner, but in the best way. “There’s something powerful about being truly seen and celebrated,” said Plenty. “To hear my name called meant so much - not just personally, but as a performer who’s looking to plant roots in this city and collaborate with the beautiful community here.”  While she doesn’t perform regularly in Boston currently, Landa Plenty is hoping this win opens some doors. She says she’d love to connect with local drag performers to create some real magic together, and in the meantime looks forward to continuing her work with Out at the Fair, where she hosts events at various state and county fairs on the West Coast, creating joyful, safe spaces for queer communities.  In the words of RuPaul herself: “Condragulations! The people have spoken, and the results are in!  On Sunday, May 25, master margarita mixologists from Boston’s best bars and restaurants competed at Time Out Market Boston for the title of Best Margarita in Fenway. One by one, guests sampled and savored samples of different margarita variations and cast their votes for who they thought should be crowned the Margarita King or Queen. In the end, the winner not only wowed the crowd, but proved that when it comes to margarita magic, they’ve got the recipe for perfection.  Here’s how Lolita Back Bay claimed the crown and what went into the drink that stole the show.  “We had a really fun time while competing, and it was awesome to see the turn out,” recalled Marcio Neto, Service Bar Manager at Lolita Back Bay. “Finding out that we had been voted the people’s choice for the best margarita felt amazing, and it was awesome getting to be there to represent Lolita and Coje Management Group.”  The recipe is the brainchild of Ray Tremblay, Coje Management Group’s Director of Bars, who said his inspiration for the winning recipe comes from the craving for bright, refreshing flavors during the summertime.  “There’s something about watermelon with a squeeze of lime and a sprinkle of Tajín that just hits right every time. So I wanted to channel that into a margarita that’s easy to love, but layered enough to stand out,” said Tremblay. “This particular cocktail is built around a mix of fresh watermelon juice and Fruitful Mixology’s watermelon liquor for clarity and punch. A splash of Aperol adds a bit of bitterness and ties into the citrus and pepper notes of a good blanco tequila. A pinch of salt helps balance the sweetness and brings out more dimension in the fruit.”  The cocktail is finished with a half-rim of Tajín and a mint bouquet for garnish—adding just the right amount of spice and aromatic lift. The result is a bright, juicy and super crushable margarita, which is exactly what you want in your hand on a hot day.   “While the exact recipe remains a trade secret, we welcome you to come to either Lolita location to enjoy a few!”  Congratulations Ray, Marcio, and the entire Lolita and Coje Management Group teams on winning the title of Best Margarita in Fenway!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for…New Zealand real fruit ice cream? Meet Far Out, the swirly treat shop with three locations in Greater Boston—including one at Time Out Market—that serves delicious, creamy ice cream always made with real fruit.  Founded by August Radbill, Far Out Ice Cream has become a fan favorite since opening its first location in Brookline four years ago. “Not too long before we opened, I was working in tech and had begun to feel burnt out and ready for a change,” recalls Radbill. “I was getting ready to leave for a trip to New Zealand and was having dinner at my now business partner’s house when he made it a point to insist I try the ice cream there. I didn’t think much of it to be honest, but alas I took his advice and immediately understood what the hype was all about. When I got back home, it was all I could think about.”  Unlike traditional ice cream, which is often premixed or frozen, Face Out’s New Zealand-style ice cream is always made fresh to order, blending a base of vanilla or chocolate ice cream with real fruit in a special machine. And Far Out’s commitment to using locally sourced ingredients means everything is always fresh.  “Our new base uses dairy sourced from Mapleline Farm in Western Massachusetts. They raise these beautiful Jersey cattle, known as the cadillac of cows for the high butter fat content in their milk, which results in a super rich product,” said Radbill. Far Out also uses liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze their base, which makes it a smoother, creamier ice cream than the more traditional churned alternative.  “It’s been so fun to see people fall in love with New Zealand ice cream the same way I did. And we’re excited to continue to grow and find new opportunities to share this special product with more and more people, here in Boston, and eventually beyond.”  Ice cream aside, Radbill could not help but sing the praises of his team, crediting them for much of what has made Far Out so successful. “At Far Out, we subscribe to this philosophy of ‘enlightened hospitality’ which is all about hiring the right people, and making sure they’re happy so that their happiness shines through in every customer interaction,” he said. “We’re so lucky to have the best people in the world working with us who have shown a level of commitment and passion for their work and our product that I would have never expected from an ice cream shop. It’s hard work, and you can never take your foot off the gas, but when you have good people around you, and you stay true to your values, it’s all very worthwhile.”  Next time you’re in the neighborhood, visit Far Out at Time Out Market and try the kookaberry, a fan favorite made with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries mixed into your choice of a vanilla or chocolate base. It was a battle of bops, beats and ballads at this year’s Fenway’s Got Talent singing competition at Time Out Market. Five weeks, thirty-five contestants, and nine finalists…but only one act walked away with the grand prize of two weekend passes to this year’s Boston Calling music festival and the title of winner of Fenway’s Got Talent Season 3.  We caught up with this year’s winning act, Stardew—a duo made up of Berklee students Kiera and Isabella—to talk about what’s next, their musical inspirations and their showstopping finale performance.  First of all, congratulations on winning Season 3 of Fenway’s Got Talent. How did it feel to hear your name called at the finale?  Both of us feel like it’s pretty unreal, to be honest. We didn’t expect to hear our names called at all. Isabella saw the ad for the contest and we decided to enter as a way to put ourselves out there. We were excited to perform together and have a good time, and the prize sounded pretty cool. We are so grateful, and excited to go back to our first musical festival. It’s also super encouraging since music is what we love and want to do full-time someday. We still can’t believe it, but here we are.  You talked about performing together. How did you two meet?  We first met freshman year at Berklee in our college dorm. We were randomly paired as roommates for the year and immediately bonded over our love of music and performing. We started performing together and Stardew was born.  Who are your biggest musical inspirations?  We’re really inspired by all sorts of artists and genres but when it comes to who inspires our signature “Stardew Sound,” there are a few who really stand out. Kiera, for example, is really inspired by Adrianne Lenker, a singer, songwriter and guitarist who is known for her songwriting style which she describes as “transforming scars into something beautiful.” Isabella, on the other hand, is a big fan of Fleetwood Mac and the Paper Kites.  Can you tell me a little bit about your finale performance? It had the entire audience clapping along at one point, and it obviously impressed our judges.  Sure. We performed “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine! It’s one of our favorite songs in our repertoire to perform together and we’ve used it at almost every gig we’ve ever played in Boston. It was so fun to see the audience clapping and singing along and having as much fun as we were having. The original song is always a crowd-pleasure, and we were so happy everyone enjoyed our cover, too!  Now that you’ve won the Boston Calling tickets, are there any artists you’re most excited to see play live?  We are both super excited to see Cage the Elephant and Mon Rovia perform!  Last but not least, if folks want to see you perform in Boston, where can they find you? What’s next for Stardew?  We don’t have any specific dates yet, but we busk all around Boston and play local gigs in restaurants and bars often. You can find us performing around the Boston Common, Newbury Street, local pubs and so many other places. Spring has sprung, and that means a new batch of cocktails are in bloom at Time Out Market Boston. Now, they’re serving up even more exciting things to sip on. “Time Out Market is a special place for a lot of reasons, and the beverage program is no different,” said Meghan Murphy, Assistant General Manager and mastermind behind the seasonal cocktail program. “I think the beauty in creating a drink menu at a place like Time Out is leaning into the fact that we’re surrounded by the best food in the city. I had a lot of fun drawing inspiration from the different types of cuisine and combining flavors that you may not always think of as obvious, but are oh so delicious.”  The process of creating a seasonal menu begins with a list of seasonal flavors and produce that Murphy wants to highlight or feature. “I started designing this menu in the winter,” said Murphy. “I tried to picture the patio, Red Sox games, and longer, sunnier days, and the flavors those things made me think of.”  Murphy said that this menu has something for everyone. It features flavors ranging from sweet, tart, floral and fruity, to effervescent, boozy, spicy and earthy. Prefer something a bit hoppier?
