20 best things to do in Stockholm

Sure, there’s always ABBA, Yung Lean, Avicii and Zara Larsson, but if a Stockholmer gets sentimental, he or she might burst into the ’90s Lasse Berghagen song ‘Stockholm i mitt hjĂ€rta’. The song, which translates to ‘Stockholm in My Heart’, is a love letter to the city, celebrating its beauty with its golden Nordic light and its ‘perfect mixture of sweet and salt’. Do not miss: The best things to do in Stockholm in autumn 🍁   But it’s not only the salty sea of the archipelago or Swedes’ obsession with fika and candy that gives the city its unique appeal. It’s that distinct blend of restrained Nordic minimalism alongside a restless pursuit of the future. It’s the cool pubs, bistros and thrift stores of Södermalm; the glitzy floating bars at StrandvĂ€gen and Strömkajen with their sun-drenched patios; and the buzzing backstreets of downtown Norrmalm and Stureplan, where Michelin restaurants and high-end eateries blend with fashionable shopping streets and nightclubs. Here are the essential things to do, see and eat in the stunning Scandinavian capital – enough to make you want to join in the serenade. Some of our Stockholm highlights:  Take a stroll on Stockholm's most beautiful street, StrandvĂ€gen Or do your own walking sight seeing tour around the Heights of Söder Scream your lungs out and smell the flowers at DjurgĂ„rden  Watch world-class photography at Fotografiska  Take a boat trip to the nearest Stockholm archipelago Island  Have a red velvet croissant at Mr Cake – one o

Top things to do in Stockholm with kids

I remember the first time I visited Stockholm’s Butterfly House with my daughter, then one and a half years old. ‘Look, fishies!’ she exclaimed happily when spotted the huge tank with colourful koi fish and carps. She squealed with delight and did a little dance, stamping her feet. Then she ran closer – and fell silent. With wide eyes, she followed their swaying movements, completely spellbound. In that moment, a sense of wonder at the world returned, thanks to seeing it in a new light through my daughter. Of course, moments like these can happen anywhere. For a child, it can be a grand adventure to dig for worms in the soil or spot the rubbish truck. But in some places, the magic feels just a little bit bigger. Sweden’s capital is packed with activities and potential adventures for little (and larger) legs. From the best museums with interactive exhibitions where kids can actually touch everything, to a child-friendly brunch and the city’s best playground – here are our top picks for things to do in Stockholm with kids. The best things to do in Stockholm in autumn

In the Swedish capital, the seasons are distinct, and as the parasols come down at the city's outdoor cafés and restaurants, Stockholm slowly turns shades of red, yellow and orange. In September, we wave goodbye to summer with crayfish parties and silly hats, raise our beer steins at Oktoberfest and make the most of the last warm rays of sunshine, wrapped up in a blanket or browsing an autumn market with a steaming cup of coffee in hand. And if there's one thing Stockholmers love, it's fika. So much so that the city enthusiastically celebrates no fewer than four food and drink-themed days: International Coffee Day on September 29, followed by Cinnamon Bun Day on October 4, International Fika day at October 22 and Sticky Chocolate Cake Day on November 7. Autumn is also prime time for culture, with locals and visitors alike heading to Stockholm's best museums and making the most of a packed theatre programme. October and November also bring several festivals, including the Stockholm International Film Festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival and Stockholm Craft Week. Then come All Saints' Day and Halloween, two occasions that bring everything from peaceful candlelit commemorations to adrenaline-fuelled parades and horror festivals. Here, we've rounded up some of our favourite things to see and do in Stockholm this autumn.

Bad Bunny concerts turn Stockholm's biggest mall into one big festival area

Bad Bunny concerts turn Stockholm's biggest mall into one big festival area

The countdown to the summer's biggest event is officially on. But why settle for just a regular show? Your Bad Bunny ticket gets you a concert. No ticket? Still worth the trip. Arenastaden Goes Live – the official name for the takeover – gets you an extended festival-like day.  So treat the ticket as a day pass, not a start time. And better yet, while the actual concerts are on the 10th and 11th, Westfield Mall of Scandinavia – or MOS, as the locals call it – kicks things off a day ahead on Thursday, July 9th, making it the perfect way to hype up before the main event. For the occasion, the mall, the surrounding district as well as the adjacent hotels Quality Hotel Strawberry Arena and the Comfort Hotel Solna, are running a stage of their own, with DJs, dance shows, mocktails and carnival parades, hours before the doors even open. The short version: the show starts the moment you arrive, not the moment Bad Bunny walks on stage.

Stockholm’s best hotels: handpicked favourites from luxury to budget

Stockholm’s best hotels: handpicked favourites from luxury to budget

These days, hotel marketing often seems obsessed with making you feel at home. But for me, much of the magic of checking into a hotel is about getting away from home. The fact that it doesn’t feel like home is precisely the point. Room service at your fingertips, beautiful designer furniture and a generous breakfast buffet. Crisp, freshly laundered sheets, everything perfectly in place and fragrant cut flowers on the table, all without having to lift a finger. Then there’s the excitement of discovering somewhere new, soaking up fresh impressions and spending a few days getting to know a new neighbourhood, city or part of town. For a capital that likes to see itself in the same league as Paris, London and New York, a little delusion of grandeur never hurt anyone, Stockholm has a hotel scene that genuinely delivers. Sure, you won’t get the kind of lavish service where hotel staff jump at your every whim. That’s simply not the Swedish way, with our flat hierarchies and strong egalitarian tradition. But that said, Stockholm leaves little to be desired. And we do take our design and morning coffee seriously. There are the grand old luxury hotels with front-row seats on the waterfront in Norrmalm and Östermalm, the sleek modern hotels around Brunkebergstorg, charming boutique stays tucked into the wonky corners and quirky spaces of Vasastan, and new openings on Södermalm where the food is given just as much attention as the rooms. Time Out has combed through Stockholm’s hotel scene

What they all have in common is that they’re in lovely destinations that are well worth a trip in their own right. Whatever you’re into, we hope you’ll find something here that’s right up your street. So pull on your cosiest woolly jumper, check out the list and start planning your next autumn adventure!

Ett Hem

Ett Hem

5 out of 5 stars
Behind the heavy metal gate in Östermalm’s lush LĂ€rkstaden lies an immaculate property. Here, rubbing shoulders with embassies and grand townhouses, the place hums with the quiet, effortless luxury of designer Ilse Crawford and founder Jeanette Mix. With more staff than guests, Ett Hem could easily feel overly grand, but you never feel fussed over in the traditional sense. That’s also Ett Hem’s greatest triumph and defining quality. The service is personal and relaxed. Everything is exquisitely put together, from the communal spaces filled with contemporary art and hand-picked designer furniture to the exceptionally good food. If you’re hungry, just head down to the kitchen and have a chat with the chefs, who’ll whip up something based on your preferences and whatever produce is freshest that day, often sourced from dedicated small-scale producers. Then eat wherever you fancy, whether that’s in the kitchen, dining room, greenhouse or library. The house also has a leafy courtyard, dotted with sculptures and flowers from its in-house florist. Speaking of sculptures, the art deserves a mention. Ett Hem isn’t just one of Stockholm’s best hotels, it’s also one of the city’s most interesting galleries. Throughout the property, selected works from Mix’s private collection hang on the walls, with pieces by international giants such as Tracey Emin and Wolfgang Tillmans alongside acclaimed Swedish artists including Mamma Andersson and Jockum Nordström.

The hidden pool beneath Stockholm’s Old Town

The hidden pool beneath Stockholm’s Old Town

Introducing Hîtel Reisen, now part of Hyatt's Unbound Collection. It’s a five-star waterfront hotel in a building with more than 400 years of history, where old brick walls meet modern Scandinavian design. The building started life as a drinking den and coffee house for sailors and poets, and even earned a mention from the beloved Swedish poet and songwriter Carl Michael Bellman, long before becoming the luxury hotel it is today. The rooms are elegant and comfy, and the views are some of the best in town, but its biggest treasure lies beneath ground level. Johanna Jackson Under the ancient brick vaults, there's an underground spa and pool. To make the experience even more Scandinavian, the pool stays around 15°C – perfect for that true coolcation experience that the Swedish capital has become known for. Luckily, there is also a sauna right next to it to warm up afterwards. The catch? You’ll have to book a stay at the hotel to take a dip.  Johanna Jackson Rooms from around SEK 2,000, or from around SEK 3,000 with a sea view, and a suite with a sauna from around SEK 5,000 per night. Here’s what Lidingö’s new Acqua di Foresta spa looks like in pictures

Two years ago: dark basement spaces. Today: one of Stockholm’s most beautiful spas. There are several relaxation areas, Gotland limestone, Gregorian chants and a steam sauna with Swarovski crystals. The marbled and hand-painted walls are also adorned with works from owner Torbjörn Blomqvist’s private collection, by contemporary artists including Maria Friberg, Denise GrĂŒnstein and Esko MĂ€nnikkö. ‘The name Acqua di Foresta captures the feeling we want to create, an experience where water, nature and tranquillity take centre stage. We’re convinced that Wilhelmina Skogh, who once had Villa Foresta built, would have appreciated the way we’re preserving the history of the place while developing it for the future,’ says Torbjörn Blomqvist, owner of Villa Foresta. There are several different spaces and rooms to explore, as well as bespoke treatments and body rituals, from warming clay and Gua Sha to aromatherapy and massage with hot Himalayan stones. Other highlights include the spa’s unique signature treatment, where you’re pampered with a gentle massage using silk gloves. And not least, incredible views over the water and Frihamnen. The new spa offers a number of different spaces and experiences: Prosecco pools – outdoor pools with views over the sea TornkĂ€llan – a secluded pool inside Villa Foresta’s tower Hot springs – heated outdoor pools Four different sauna experiences – spa sauna, steam sauna, infrared sauna and classic dry sauna The Rain Trail – a water experience alterna

Viral cinnamon bun café Bunzy has landed in Stockholm

Viral cinnamon bun café Bunzy has landed in Stockholm

There’s barely a self-respecting bakery in the city that doesn’t have cinnamon buns behind the counter. But the American version, baked in large trays and smothered in frosting, hasn’t exactly found its place on the fika scene. Until now! Yesterday, Buunzy opened its doors in the capital in Vasastan after around its first opening, six months ago in BorĂ„s. Behind the hype are a group of young entrepreneurs who have found success on social media with their buns – childhood friends Ahmad Selwaieh, 24, and Najeeb Altounji, 22– alongside Gabriella Davey, who created most of the recipes. And there’s been plenty of interest offline too. The day after opening, queues stretched out the door, with waits of around 40 minutes. Besides a savoury version with hot honey and pepperoni, there are plenty of sweet options, including Oreo-style, Biscoff and raspberry cream cheese, to name a few.  Adress: Hagagatan 37. The closest metro is Odenplan. The cafĂ© is open Thursday to Sunday from 10.00 to 18.00.
Here’s when Stockholm’s new dinosaur experience opens

Here’s when Stockholm’s new dinosaur experience opens

Forget everything you know about dusty museum sculptures and glass display cases. On October 22, Bergrummet’s 2,500-square-metre space beneath Skeppsholmen will be transformed into a prehistoric landscape as DINOS Experience opens its doors. According to the organisers, the space has been completely transformed to give visitors the feeling of stepping into a prehistoric world filled with sound, light, wind and even smells. The exhibition, which features more than 2,000 plants, will also be home to 26 life-size animatronic dinosaurs, two complete skeletons and three skulls, as well as a bistro and bar. ‘We strongly believe in physical experiences at a time when more and more of our lives take place through a screen. There’s enormous power in creating places that people want to travel to, talk about and experience together,’ says Janne Broman, co-founder of DINOS Experience, in a press release. Tickets are already available to book in advance. Adult admission costs SEK 195, while tickets for children aged three and over cost SEK 145. DÄ öppnar nya dinosaurieupplevelsen i Stockholm
