Despite the sad closures of Cathay Cineplexes and alternative cinema The Projector recently happening within a month of each other, we refuse to believe that film is a dying art. If anything, the annual Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) proves that there’s still much love for the big screen, as it returns for its 36th edition.
Held over two weeks from November 26 to December 7, 2025, the upcoming iteration of the film festival – part of Singapore Media Festival 2025 – features over 110 films from more than 45 countries around the globe. Out of that are 30 short films and feature films by local filmmakers that touch on societal issues in Singapore and themes that we hold close to heart.
Some highlights include Sandbox, a comedy starring Benjamin Kheng, Nathan Hartono, and Oon Shu An; At Home with Work, a documentary which provides a deeper glimpse into the everyday challenges faced by home-based businesses, and Cendol by actor Qi Yuwu, featuring Sharon Au and centred on the topics of self-identity and family.
Film screenings aside, SGIFF will also host engaging dialogue sessions that discuss the evolution of the local film industry and how independent filmmaking can be better-supported in current times.
