With upgrades along the way, while keeping the DNA of the old Projector

Just a few months back, our hearts broke when Singapore’s beloved indie cinema The Projector announced it was shutting its doors after a near decade-long run as a cornerstone of Singapore’s indie film scene. But here’s the plot twist we needed: the well-loved Golden Mile hideout isn’t staying dark for long; it is getting a second life, with a new indie cinema, Filmhouse, stepping into the space.
Led by Sharon Tan, former general manager at The Projector, and members of its former core team, Filmhouse aims for a soft opening in late January or early February. The name was a deliberate choice – “we wanted to create a home for films and film lovers,” she told The Straits Times.
Filmhouse is giving the space a technical refresh, with the Green Room getting a 4K projection upgrade, while Redrum and the Blue Room stick with 2K setups. Long-time patrons will recognise the hall names – they’re staying put as a knowing wink to the venue’s past life.
And though aesthetic changes are coming, they will not be at the expense of old times. While the cinema gets a fresh coat of paint, select murals will remain, preserving the visual DNA that made the space instantly recognisable.
For its soft launch, Filmhouse is setting the tone early with a thoughtfully curated lineup. Starting with Sentimental Value, a Norwegian-language drama that took home the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2025, as well as Hamnet, Chloé Zhao’s award-winning period film starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, which recently clinched Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the 2026 Golden Globes.
Stay tuned for more updates.
