Is 2026 the year of Roald Dahl? It certainly seems to be the case, with multiple titles by the children’s author coming to life as stage adaptations next year. Stomping its way into Esplanade Theatre is the classic story of BFG – short for “Big Friendly Giant” – which will be making its debut here just a month before the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical transforms the Sands Theatre at MBS into candyland.
Singapore is currently the only stop outside the UK for this stage performance co-produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chichester Festival Theatre, Roald Dahl Story Company, and Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT).
Follow young orphan protagonist Sophie on an adventure in Dream Country with the BFG, with whom she becomes fast friends despite an initial fear. As a rare giant that doesn't eat humans, the BFG catches dreams and gives only good ones to children while destroying the bad ones – but his gentle nature also makes him the subject of bullying by other giants in Giant Country. The two misfits band together and go on a quest to convince the Queen of England to stop the other giants from eating ‘human beans’. Will they succeed, or will Sophie become giant fodder?
Get your tickets this October and come along for this unforgettable ride – just make sure you don’t feed the giants.
