Desserts are built different in the USA. They’re bigger, denser and far sweeter than the sort of snacks we get over here. British doughnuts, pies, pastries and cookies aren’t in the same league, though we have some US chains that give us a taste of desserts across the Pond. The UK already has Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts – but now another American brand is bringing its bakes over for the first time: Randy’s Donuts.

If you don’t recognise the name, you might recognise it’s humungous steel doughnut in LA, which Tony Stark sits on in Iron Man 2 and which breaks off the roof and speeds down the street in 2012. The chain first launched in Inglewood, California in 1952 and now has dozens of branches across the States and in Mexico, Asia and the Middle East.

Randy’s now has its sights set on launching in the UK. And it’s chosen Edinburgh as its first location.

The chain serves up all sorts of doughnut (or, as it spells it, ‘donut’). There are ‘classic selections’ like chocolate, glazed and maple, ‘fancy selections’ like strawberry jelly, coconut and its signature apple fritter, and the top-tier ‘premium selections’ which include matcha, s’more, bacon maple long john and red velvet. There are also whipped cream topped coffees and fruity in-house lemonades.

A planning application has been submitted to Edinburgh City Council for a building on Forrest Road in Edinburgh’s Old Town, which was previously home to a Barburrito. The site is nearby the university, the National Museum of Scotland and the Royal Mile, so it gets a lot of student and tourist footfall.

The application mostly relates to changing the site’s exterior signage, which would feature an illuminated Randy’s Donuts logo. We imagine it’ll be a bit more low-key than the 32ft doughnut that looms over its LA branch.

No official opening date has been confirmed, but on its website Randy’s states that its Edinburgh site is ‘coming soon’.
