Everything is bigger in the US; including their sandwiches. And you’ll now get to see for yourself as much-loved American chain Jersey Mike’s is about to launch its debut UK outlet.

After slinging subs for 70 years, Jersey Mike’s will be coming to Soho later this year (they’re saying late autumn), setting up shop on Argyll Street before three other branches launch in central London. Could this be what becomes of the old Angus Steakhouse building by Oxford Street station? They’ve already got over 3,000 branches in the US, so this sub takeover has been a long time coming.

Jersey Mike’s are known for their Italian-leaning submarine rolls which come filled with sliced meats and cheeses such as provolone, ham, swiss cheese, turkey and cappacuolo, then sloshed with ‘the juice’: an in-house dressing of  red wine vinegar and oil. You can also choose to have your sub ‘Mike’s Way’ - with onions, lettuce and tomatoes. Subway, who?

The first branch of Jersey Mike’s was called Mike’s Subs and opened in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Current chairman Peter Cancro started working there when he was 14 years old, and in 1975 when he was 17, he bought the business for $125,000 after borrowing the cash from his high school football coach. He changed the name to Jersey Mike’s in the 1980s.

Speaking about the London openings Peter Cancro has commented: ‘Jersey Mike’s has always been about making a great sub, taking care of our customers and giving back to the communities we’re part of. I’m incredibly excited to bring that same spirit to the UK. We’ve spent decades building this brand in America, and now we’re ready to introduce a whole new audience to what we mean when we say “a Sub Above”.’
