Britain has had a thing for Basque cuisine for a while now. More and more chefs are playing with open-fire cooking, our martinis are being served with a side of pintxos and we simply can’t get enough of burnt cheesecake. Want proof? Just look at the soaring popularity of London Basque cheesecake specialists La Maritxu.
La Maritxu opened in Connaught Village near London’s Hyde Park in 2021, inspired by the desserts of Bilbao. But it truly blew up in 2024 thanks to social media. It was then able to branch out to Greenwich, Soho and, most recently, Kings Cross. Now, it’s taking its cheesecakes beyond the M25.
La Maritxu is launching at luxury shopping centre Bicester Village in the Cotswolds in October. The opening menu will of course feature the bakery’s signature cheesecake, which is baked at a high temperature to get the distinctive caramelised top and creamy centre. You’ll be able to get that by the slice for £7 or get mini, medium and whole cakes to bring home starting from £11.
There’ll also be two autumnal specials: tiramisu cheesecake and chocolate and orange cheesecake. They will be available by the slice for £7.50 or as a full cake from £13, depending on the size you want. Besides the cheesecake, shoppers can pop in for fresh tea, coffee and seasonal hot drinks.
La Maritxu will launch in Bicester Village on Thursday, October 1 and will be open from 9am to 9pm.
