More food is on the menu at this year’s Göteborgskalas

Over the next few days, Göteborgskalaset is once again taking over the city, with a huge food area stretching across Kungstorget and Basargatan. Among the highlights is the Street Food Festival, the biggest of its kind in Sweden, which runs throughout the festival. On Friday, the Swedish Street Food and Sweet Food Championships will be decided at 14:00 on Kungstorget.

There’ll also be bars serving craft beer and wine, plus a guided tour of the local drinks producers at the festival. These include Poppels brewery, Ego Distillers, urban winery Wine Mechanics and coffee from Kafferäven. Over on Avenyn, several businesses are taking things out onto the street for a big celebration, while Musselbaren in Ljungskile will lay out a long table for a mussel feast.

And what about the music? On Thursday, Sarah Klang performs with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, followed by Miriam Bryant. Friday’s line-up includes Arvingarna, Teddybears and Terra. The latter are fresh from a successful show at Way Out West and were only added to the Göteborgskalaset line-up a few days ago.

According to a press release, Terra said: ‘Not everyone can afford festival tickets, so it feels great to be able to play for everyone, when it’s free and there’s no age limit.’ On Saturday, A-Teens, Sahara Hotnights and Jireel are among those taking to the stage. This year marks the 21st edition of Göteborgskalaset, but it’s also the first year the festival has returned to its original name, Göteborgskalaset. In the intervening years, it has gone by names including ‘EM-festen’ and ‘Göteborgs Kulturkalas’.
