Caféva on Haga Nygata is almost as much a fixture of Gothenburg as Poseidon himself. Now, the classic 43-year-old café is branching out.
It was confirmed this spring that Gapet in Majorna would be closing, after years as a regular haunt for freelancers and parents with young children alike. Several people were interested in taking over the corner premises on Silverkällegatan, but in the end it went to sisters Siri and Lova Nylén. Renovations are in full swing and the doors will open to the public at the end of August.
‘We’re completely exhausted, but it feels great,’ says Lova Nylén.
Their mother Eva Nylén opened Caféva in the ’80s, and Siri took over running it a few years ago. Now she and her sister Lova will run Caféva Lilla, with Lova at the helm.
The much-talked-about herb roll will of course be on the menu, along with the lunchtime soup. There’ll also be a sandwich with pickled herring and potatoes, and another with cream cheese, grilled peppers and pickled fennel. They’re busy testing cakes, and exactly which ones will make the menu is yet to be decided.
Gapet opened in 2019 and quickly became one of western Gothenburg’s most popular, and Instagram-friendly, cafés. What Lina Rönsberg will do next remains to be seen.
