Orchids may be relatively fuss-free to care for, but getting them to bloom in Singapore’s humid climate can be a real challenge. For those who haven’t had much luck coaxing their orchid to flower at home, Orchid Extravaganza at Gardens by the Bay offers the perfect opportunity to admire these stunning blooms in full glory. Running from August 1 to 31 at the Flower Dome, this edition of the floral display marks both Singapore’s birthday month and the spotlight on the country’s national flower.
This year’s display brings together over 6,000 orchids arranged into representations of well-known Singapore landmarks and motifs. At the heart of the display stands a trio of Supertrees clad entirely in orchids. Feel free to step inside the tallest one, standing at 6.5m, and admire the vibrant display of blooming orchids.
The exhibition also features the national flower, Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, alongside a selection of hybrids named after local neighbourhoods and institutions, including the Papilionanda Chua Chu Kang and Vanda KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The display also highlights Peranakan heritage through floral recreations of traditional interiors, complete with authentic kebayas and beaded slippers, and original furniture and artefacts loaned by the Peranakan Museum.
