A new Italian deli is setting up shop along Amoy Street, and it’s all about focaccia by day and champagne by night. Mamma Mia Focaccia officially opens its doors on October 21 with a four-day launch promotion till October 24, where the first 50 sandwiches daily (from 11am to noon) are completely free. After that, they’re yours at $10 each, which is still quite the steal.

The grab-and-go joint is run by the same folks behind popular F&B concepts like Asador and Next Door Spanish Cafe, and is open on weekdays only. We see it quickly becoming a go-to lunch spot for those working around the CBD or along Amoy Street, especially if you’re not feeling the heat and queues at Amoy Street Food Centre that day. There are no seats here, just standing counters.

Mamma Mia Focaccia’s house-made focaccia is long-fermented and baked fresh daily, then toasted again before serving so it reaches you warm and with a crunchy exterior. The golden, pillowy slices come plain instead of seasoned with herbs, tomatoes or olives like you might expect, to let the spotlight shine on the fresh deli fillings. Pick from 10 sandwiches on the menu, stuffed with anything from San Daniele ham ($24) and 'nduja ($22), to stacks layered with spicy salami ($18) and coppa ($24).

Prices start from $14 for the vegetarian option with grilled vegetables, red pesto, pickled onions and mascarpone – a surprising banger with the grilled artichokes standing out the most. There’s also the sweet and savoury Nutella sandwich ($14) with mascarpone, pistachio shavings, pistachio cream and a generous layer of everyone’s favourite hazelnut spread.

The signature sandwich is the Mamma Mia! ($22), layered with mortadella slices, stracciatella, pistachio cream and pistachio shavings. It’s a classic option that you won’t go wrong with, but we prefer the porchetta sandwich ($18), which has generous slices of porchetta, pickled leafy greens (friarielli) and stracciatella. The secret ingredient here is mostarda – a traditional Italian sauce made of caramelised fruits – which adds a subtle hint of sweetness to every bite without being cloying.

For something different, opt for the Tonno ($15), where spicy tuna goes excellently with savoury pairings like black olive paste and sundried tomatoes, along with pickled onions and arugula to complete the medley. Despite the higher price points for the sandwiches, the portions are relatively hefty, so we recommend sharing if you are a small eater. Make sure to grab coffee too. You’ll notice that it’s distinctly Italian – that is, heavily roasted, bitter, and sure to jolt you awake for the rest of the work day.

When evening falls, walk past the deli counter and through the bright red door. You’ll stumble into The Champagnery, a 40-seater champagne speakeasy. It’s expected to open some time in November with gorgeous lounge areas, moody lighting, plush gold accents, a killer DJ lineup and a whole menu dedicated to the world’s favourite bubbles. The bar will boast over 60 labels of champagnes, from big-name maisons to lesser-known grower bottles for enthusiasts. A tight list of cocktails will also be served, most if not all being champagne-forward creations, though we’re sure you can get away asking for a negroni if champagne is not your thing.

And as the night deepens, music takes the centre stage, with curated DJ beats playing from 9.30pm to 2am in the night, and maybe 3am if the crowd so wishes, making it one of the rare, truly late-night spots along Amoy Street. Nightlife expert Erin Khan – a DJ herself – runs the music and event programmes here, and has her eyes set on spotlighting female DJs and packing the space for Ladies’ Nights on Wednesdays.

Mamma Mia Focaccia opens on October 21 and will operate from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4.30pm, while the The Champagnery opens on October 21 and will operate from Tuesday to Thursday from 6pm to 3am, and Friday and Saturday from 7pm to 4am, at 94 Amoy St, Singapore 069914.
