There are some places that leave a lasting impression on you long after you walk out the door. The Apartheid Museum is one of those places. Having lived in Johannesburg for decades, I’m almost ashamed to admit that I had never visited the museum before. It had always been on my bucket list, but I kept putting it off. Maybe because we learn so much about apartheid in school, read about it in textbooks, and watch films based on that painful chapter in our history, it can feel like we already understand it. But nothing prepares you for walking through those gates - the experience felt deeply emotional. The museum represents a rich and painful history, but it also tells a story of victory, resilience and the strength of South Africans who endured unimaginable hardship and still fought for freedom. The vibe  I visited on a Saturday, and the museum was busy. What stood out to me was how many international visitors there were, something I’ve heard is quite common. If there are three words to describe Ukkō restaurant, they would be aesthetics, vibes, and excellent service. From the moment I first came across the restaurant on Instagram, I was sold. The food photography alone was enough to make anyone hungry, and I knew immediately that I had to experience it for myself. The vibe I decided to visit on a Wednesday afternoon for a relaxed girls’ date. Since it was during the week, the restaurant was pleasantly calm and not overcrowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable. From karaoke booths to flavour-packed Vietnamese-inspired dishes, Saigon Suzy in Fourways delivers a dining experience that is hard to forget. With vibrant décor, generous portions, and standout dishes, this restaurant is everything you want and more. First impressions There is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Fourways, and it goes by the name of Saigon Suzy. When I first decided to visit, I had no idea what to expect. My colleague Andrew Hallett saw the massive burger that vlogger Joe Fleming had posted on Instagram. One look at it and our team knew that this had to be our next restaurant review.  From the moment you arrive, the restaurant makes a striking first impression. Set in the heart of Waterfall City, Midrand, Cowfish is easily one of the coolest dining spots in the area. I discovered it the way many of us do these days - while scrolling through Instagram, craving something delicious. Their ribs-and-wings lunch special for R189 immediately caught my attention. As a lover of both, I knew I had to try it. I got into the car and headed to the restaurant. Waterfall City itself has a distinctive upmarket vibe, popular for both business meetings and relaxed outings. I visited on a Thursday just before noon, and the area was calm and pleasantly quiet. Arriving a few minutes before opening time, I was among the first guests, but within an hour the restaurant began filling up with groups of professionals, friends, and diners of varying ages enjoying lunch. First impressions were excellent. The restaurant is visually striking, elegant, and welcoming, with natural tones of brown and grey, and warm lighting complemented by greenery throughout the space. The décor feels modern, and there’s also a lovely outdoor seating area that many guests chose, especially on the sunny day of my visit. While I came specifically for the ribs and wings, I learned that the restaurant runs several specials, including a popular bottomless sushi offering on weekends. So, exploring vegan cuisine was never really high on my bucket list, but when I got the opportunity to visit The Vegan Chef in Sandton, I was excited to stretch myself and experience something outside my usual comfort zone. Time Out Says Just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Vaal Villa is an ideal getaway destination for large groups looking to relax, reconnect and create lasting memories. At the beginning of every year, my family makes it a tradition to set the tone for the year ahead by going on vacation together, prioritising bonding time and shared experiences. This January, we chose Vaal Villa in Vanderbijlpark, which offers seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. When I first stepped into Time Square Hotel, I was utterly blown away by the interior décor. I couldn’t believe such a stunning hotel was tucked away in Pretoria. It made me reflect on all the times I travelled out of the province searching for luxury hotels, while something this exquisite was only 30km from home. Calling it “beautiful” almost feels like an understatement – modern, elegant, and effortlessly stylish. I arrived quite late in the evening (after 9pm), but the check-in process was seamless. Heritage Month is here in South Africa, and while the month gives us an opportunity to celebrate our culture, history and traditions, food also forms a big part of our heritage. There is something special about South African food, and for Lehlogonolo Mthombeni, the founder of Thaweni Cookery in Centurion, traditional food holds a particularly special place in her heart. When she had to decide what to specialise in through her business, leaning towards traditional food was a no-brainer. Mthombeni, who started cooking in 2016 before leaving the corporate world and going full-time into the cooking space in 2025, says her love for cooking goes way back to when she was still studying. It was during those years that she started experimenting with different foods and flavours, and it was through that practice that her cooking skills developed. Having grown up in the rural province of Limpopo before moving to the suburbs, there was something about the home-cooked meals she grew up eating that stayed with her. The food was nutritious, tasty and comforting, and no matter what restaurants in the city had to offer, she continued to love the meals she had grown up with. From the age of 10, Rachel Hastings recalls dreaming of owning a bakery, and 32 years later, she is living her dream!  Growing up in Mpumalanga before relocating to Gauteng, Rachel remembers her father taking her to a Portuguese bakery when she was a young girl. “The things there tasted phenomenal. One day, I said to my dad, who loved to order Black Forest cake and doughnuts, ‘One day I will bake it for you,’” says Rachel Hastings. The baker started her business in 2010 and has since built a name for herself by supplying her baked treats to major retailers and outlets, including Pick'n Pay, OK, BP and other garage stores. What started as a passion for baking treats for her family has grown into a successful business, with her products reaching customers across the country. It is said that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade - an adage Kutlwano Yika took literally. The young vocalist and performer, who was born in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, says his love for music goes all the way back to his childhood. From as early as creche, Kutlwano was already performing, including his memorable attempts at the national anthem.  By Grade 3, he was singing covers of popular artists such as Akon and even making money by entertaining his schoolmates. He also gained popularity as the Michael Jackson of his primary school. Kutlwano always dreamt of becoming a performer, but his journey has not been without its challenges. When he approached malls and shopping centres around Johannesburg in an attempt to secure performance opportunities, they all slammed their doors in his face. Johannesburg is one of the most vibrant cities in the country and prides itself on having plenty of outdoor spaces and activities. From community parks and walking trails to outdoor markets and recreational spaces, opportunities for Joburgers to get outside are endless. For many, these spaces are about more than simply having fun. They are about strengthening communities through offering an opportunity to reconnect with friends and family. But beyond the social benefits, research continues to highlight the countless health benefits of spending intentional time outside. Speaking to Oprah Winfrey recently, author and physician Dr. John La Puma revealed that people around the world spend an estimated 93% of their time indoors. According to the Indoor Epidemic author, this lack of outdoor exposure can have consequences for our health and wellbeing. The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to make a dramatic change to your lifestyle to turn things around. La Puma recommends spending around two hours a week, or about 17 minutes a day, intentionally outdoors in green or blue spaces. Those few minutes, he says, can be turned into “a kind of medicine”. “Your sleep begins to improve. Your focus begins to improve. Your mood begins to improve,” he said. For more than 20 years, the Jehovah Jireh Orphanage Centre in Soshanguve, Pretoria, has been a beacon of hope for vulnerable children. Today, Kgomotso Thebe is carrying forward the vision started by her late mother, the compassionate and loving Nelly Matjeke, affectionately called "Dr Nelly" who founded the organisation in 2003. Speaking to Time Out Johanesburg, Thebe reflected on the remarkable journey that began with a simple act of kindness. A vision inspired by faith According to Thebe, her mother’s journey started after attending a church conference where a sermon about God being “a father to the fatherless” deeply moved her. On her way home, she came across a young girl wandering the streets without a shirt. That single moment would change countless lives. Soon afterwards, Matjeke gathered her three children and shared her vision of opening their home to children who had nowhere else to go. At the time, the family lived in a modest two-bedroom house. “When we started, we had seven children at home. Mind you, it was a two-bedroom house, so we had to share our beds. I called them my siblings, so we shared everything with them,” Thebe recalls. “I had just finished Grade 12 and was preparing to go to tertiary, but my mom wanted to make a difference in other people’s lives. There’s an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child. For generations, that philosophy has shaped communities where people worked together to ensure the wellbeing of children. It is this same belief that lies at the heart of Umfazi WomXhosa, a movement founded by philanthropist and entrepreneur Bulelani “Buli” Mooi. The organisation believes that women thrive when they stand together, creating spaces where older women can mentor younger generations while also learning from them in return. For Mooi, the mission is deeply personal. Growing up, her parents separated, and she was raised by her father, a priest, and her stepmother. While they provided for her, she struggled with the pain of missing her biological mother while also carrying the weight of societal expectations placed on young Xhosa girls to be perfect and uphold their cultural identity. One of the defining moments of her life came after matric. Although she dreamed of furthering her studies, her biological mother told her there was no money to pay for tertiary education. Determined to build a future for herself, Mooi took a leap of faith and found part-time work at a restaurant while enrolling to study.  That decision changed her life. While working, she secured a bursary that enabled her to complete her studies. Times have changed. For many years, children relied on books and playtime to learn and pass the time. However, over the decades, technology has taken centre stage, with physical books no longer being something that many young people invest their time and energy in. But two teenage girls from the south of Johannesburg, Habiba Yousuf and Zainab Asif, are determined to change that. The young entrepreneurs - with the help of their parents, run Bookaholics, a bookstore that operates from Oriental Plaza in Fordsburg. We caught up with the pair to find out where their love for reading comes from.
