Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. The pace of Joburg is like pure adrenaline; it is fast, exhilarating, and full of possibilities. For television personality and PR co-founder Lee-Roy Wright, it’s this energy that fuels both his career and his creativity. “Johannesburg has become the city where I thrive,” he says. “It gave me the opportunity to start my television career, it’s where I discovered the beauty of radio, and it sets the tone for my PR company, The Platinum Club.” Having traded the quiet streets of Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape for the hustle of the City of Gold, Lee-Roy has fully embraced Joburg life, from its entertainment and media opportunities to its underrated gems. (Case in point: he swears by Gold Reef City, a place he says locals take for granted but shouldn’t.) We caught up with him to talk about his favourite hidden spots, inspiration, and why Jozi’s heartbeat keeps him coming back for more. Welcome to Local Intel, your guide to Johannesburg from the people who know it best. We chat with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their favourite spots and untold stories. Forget the guidebooks, this is authentic Joburg. We sit down with actor Christopher Jaftha, a familiar face from the screen and stage, whose latest film, Khaki Fever, is generating a buzz. For Jaftha, Joburg is more than just a backdrop to his career; it’s a crucible that has sharpened his craft and his character. He describes the city as a smaller-scale New York, a place where the hustle is real and the odds are stacked high, but where resilience is forged in the grind. What many locals overlook, he says, are Joburg’s greatest treasures: its people and its food, especially the snacks, which he swears are some of the best in the world. It’s this mix of grit and flavour that keeps him rooted here, and that continues to shape the stories he tells on screen. He shares his favourite spots for a quiet coffee, a great meal, and a dose of inspiration.  MORE CELEBS SHARE THEIR LOCAL SECRETS Jacaranda FM's DJ Ankletap shares his ultimate guide to the City of Gold J'Something on his Jozi Favourites J Ross on his local gems that make Johannesburg special Jonathan Boynton-Lee on his favourite ways to soak up Joburg's charm Wayne Boucher on his Joburg hit list

The Whippet

The Whippet

5 out of 5 stars
Housed in the historic Old Linden Hotel, The Whippet is a bright, airy cafĂ© that celebrates Linden’s farming heritage while serving some of the city’s most acclaimed coffee. Recognised internationally,  it was voted one of the Top 100 Best Coffee Shops in the World in Madrid, Spain, 2025. The cafĂ© effortlessly combines a nod to the suburb’s past with a modern, design-conscious vibe, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors alike. The vibe  At 10 am on a Wednesday, The Whippet in Linden is relatively busy. Most tables inside have people at them, which is unsurprising since the cafĂ© strikes the perfect balance between casual comfort and thoughtful detail. During the week, the cafĂ© attracts a mix of business people and casual diners, while on weekends, families, runners, and even furry friends fill the sunlit space. The interior walks the line between industrial edge and inviting warmth with exposed brick, golden light fixtures, and sleek wood panelling that nods to the building’s 1950s roots. The cafe's design is not just about aesthetics but also about creating a community space that reflects the neighbourhood and its people, and you get a sense of that when you walk in. The food  The Whippet offers an all-day brunch menu, so expect everything from the traditional big farm breakfast and eggs Benedict to smashed burger tacos and rump steak sandwiches. The Buttermilk Chicken Benedict is a best seller, and with good reason. Golden, crispy chicken paired with perfectly
Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank

4 out of 5 stars
When I pulled up to the matte black building that houses the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, I was instantly intrigued. What lay beyond those imposing walls? The façade gives very little away, but step inside and you will find a hotel as vibrant and cool as the neighbourhood it’s in. The lobby is a striking tribute to Johannesburg’s emerging talent, featuring a curated art collection. At its heart is Hyde’s iconic endless sofa, set against a dramatic six-metre custom screen adorned with over 1,200 handcrafted ceramic beads. Written on some of the beads, you’ll find popular song titles offering a glimpse into Hyde’s musical roots.   Why stay at Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank? Hyde might be new to Joburg, but the brand has been setting the mood since 2005. It all started on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip, where Hyde Lounge redefined nightlife with its electric atmosphere and velvet-rope mystique. Since then, Hyde has grown into a global lifestyle brand with hotels, beach clubs, mixology lounges, and residences, each one designed to keep that signature spirit alive. While every Hyde property shares the brand’s vibrant, bohemian-inspired DNA, each one is uniquely shaped by its surroundings, so no two are ever quite the same. The majority of the brand’s hotels are located in leisure destinations, which makes total sense when you consider that “The freedom of a festival” is one of their brand pillars, but as the first hotel in Africa, Hyde Hotel Rosebank hits the sweet spot between urban soph

Sleep, sanity, or savings? How Joburg flyers should choose their seats

Sleep, sanity, or savings? How Joburg flyers should choose their seats

Flying has always been a balancing act between cost and comfort. Economy might look like the obvious choice when you’re watching your budget, but after a 12-hour haul to or from Johannesburg, the real price can come in the form of sore joints, restless sleep, and days spent recovering. The question is: does spending a little more upfront actually make your trip smoother, healthier, and even cheaper in the long run?  With some help from Seat Guru and the folks at Corporate Traveller, we look at the different classes.  Economy: The budget saver Let’s break it down. Economy class is the no-frills option most Joburg travellers know all too well. Expect seats around 43–45 cm wide with a pitch of 70–80 cm – essentially the personal space of a manhole cover. Perfectly fine for short hops, but less than ideal when you’re crossing time zones. After a long flight, jet lag can take up to a day and a half per time zone to reset, meaning it’s not unusual to lose nearly a week of feeling human after a major trip. Premium economy: The smart middle ground Premium economy sits somewhere in the middle, and not every airline offers it. But when they do, those extra centimetres of space, 12–18 cm more legroom and a pitch of 88–100 cm, make a world of difference. With slightly better meals, footrests, and a more generous recline, this class gives you room to stretch, sleep, and even pull out your laptop without elbowing your neighbour. For Joburgers flying home from Europe or the US, this can mea

Joburg, do you know the Muffin Man? Find out at Shrek Rave 2025

What do you get when you mix the swampy charm of Shrek, one of the most iconic soundtracks of the 2000s, and the electric energy of a rave? You get Shrek Rave, a worldwide party phenomenon that’s finally landing in Johannesburg this October. On Friday, October 10, Sognage will transform into a neon swamp where Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and a horde of ravers collide. The event is being brought to the city by Likeit-Loveit, and for coordinator Louis Williamson, Joburg was the obvious choice. “We’ve heard about the thriving rave culture and energy in South Africa, so it was a no-brainer to bring it here,” Williamson says. “The first Shrek Rave we did in London took off instantly and became a worldwide phenomenon. It’s a fantastic movie with a fantastic soundtrack, and when we paired it with rave culture, it just worked. Now we’re excited to share it with Johannesburg.” And they’re not holding back. Expect larger-than-life Shrek visuals, live performances, themed dĂ©cor, and plenty of swampy surprises. Williamson promises a fully immersive experience: “We’ve really nailed the concept to ensure that the only thing on people’s minds is, ‘When is the next one?’” Of course, no rave is complete without music, and Shrek Rave is going all out. Attendees can look forward to hit tracks from all the Shrek movies and a stacked lineup of House, Drum & Bass, Techno, Trance, and more. In other words, “All Star” and “I’m a Believer” won’t be the only anthems you’ll be screaming along to. The event i

How to explore South Africa for just R500 a day

How to explore South Africa for just R500 a day

South Africans love adventure, but let’s be real, nobody wants to break the bank doing it. In a recent study, the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) found that over 30% of local adventure travellers spend under R500 per person per day. Even on a budget, people are still hitting the road for a mix of relaxation, family time, and adventure. When it comes to accommodation, self-catering spots and B&Bs are the favourites, with value for money often guiding the choice.  “South Africans are adventure-hungry but budget-conscious,” says Flight Centre South Africa General Manager Antoinette Turner. That’s where Flight Centre’s "R500 a day Challenge" comes in, helping weekend warriors enjoy epic experiences around Johannesburg without overspending. What’s the "R500 a day Challenge"? The R500 a Day Challenge is all about proving you don’t need to spend a fortune to have an epic weekend. Focused on microadventures, these 48-hour itineraries highlight free or low-cost activities, with one memorable paid experience to make the trip shine. Tips for making the most of the R500 a day Challenge Plan your route smartly: Stick to destinations within 2–3 hours of Johannesburg to save on fuel and maximise your adventure. Map out hiking trails, scenic lookouts, and tidal pools along the way. Bundle and save: Look for accommodation packages with breakfast or value-added activities. Pick one headline paid activity and fill the rest of your itinerary with free experiences. Pack
Hide your side, South Africa: Coldplay might be coming

Hide your side, South Africa: Coldplay might be coming

South African fans, start checking your calendars, and maybe your seats. After Coldplay's Chris Martin hinted at new destinations for the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, speculation is mounting that South Africa could be next.  During the band's penultimate Wembley concert on 6 September, the frontman told the crowd that their Music of the Spheres tour wasn’t over just yet. With 138 more shows planned and dates for 2027 on the way, Martin also let slip that the tour would resume “somewhere in southern Africa in about 18 months”  Yes, you read that right. Southern. Africa. Cue the collective meltdown of fans across Mzansi, because if Coldplay does announce dates here, it’ll be their first time on South African soil since their 2011 tour. And honestly, it’s about time. Of course, excitement comes with a side of drama. Remember Coldplaygate, the viral July 2025 scandal where Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Head of HR Kristin Cabot were caught in a cheeky moment on the jumbotron at a Massachusetts concert? If Coldplay hits South Africa, you might want to “hide your side” (or better still, leave them at home) while watching the screens because anything can happen! Nothing’s been officially confirmed yet, but with Martin hinting at Southern Africa, the stars are aligning for a possible Joburg or Cape Town date. Given Coldplay’s record of selling out stadiums worldwide, we’d bet on FNB Stadium in Johannesburg and DHL Stadium in Cape Town as the most likely venues.  With international act

Johannesburg’s inner city comes alive with Babize Bonke campaign

Johannesburg’s inner city comes alive with Babize Bonke campaign

As Johannesburg gears up to host the G20 Summit in November 2025, the city is getting its moment in the global spotlight, and a powerful new campaign is making sure the world sees the real Jozi.  Launched last week on Main Street in the heart of the inner city, Babize Bonke (which means “call everyone”) is the latest initiative from Jozi My Jozi, a collaborative movement aimed at reimagining and revitalising Johannesburg’s inner city. As someone who grew up here, I couldn’t be more excited. This is exactly the kind of energy, storytelling, and creativity that shows the world what makes Joburg unlike anywhere else. A call to see the city differently The campaign’s goal is simple but powerful: to make the invisible visible and give the voiceless a voice. Through films, storytelling, and urban interventions, Babize Bonke celebrates the resilience, hustle, and creativity of Johannesburg’s residents, the very heartbeat of the city. It’s about sparking curiosity, challenging tired perceptions, and inviting the world to experience Jozi through the eyes of the people who live and shape it every day. Jozi’s champions take centre stage The first wave of Babize Bonke shines a spotlight on extraordinary Joburgers who are reshaping the city from the ground up: James Delaney – multidisciplinary artist and owner of Delaney Studio Kenneth Nzama (DJ Kenzhero) – DJ, cultural catalyst and curator Osmic Menoe – hip-hop guardian and cultural pioneer Mama Yumna – community activist and urban gard
Is BTS Coming to South Africa? Big Concerts sparks ARMY buzz

Is BTS Coming to South Africa? Big Concerts sparks ARMY buzz

K-pop fever might be about to hit Johannesburg. Big Concerts, one of the country’s leading promoters, has set local fans alight after posting an image of BTS — the global superstars behind hits like Dynamite and Butter — with the caption: “Mzansi ARMY, what do you think? Should BTS light up South Africa with a live show?” Cue chaos. Within minutes, timelines were buzzing with theories, wish lists, and full-on manifesting, because let’s be honest, if BTS did announce a stop in South Africa, it would be nothing short of historic. It would mark The Bangtan Boys' first-ever live performance in South Africa and one of the biggest K-pop concerts the country has ever hosted. Imagine FNB Stadium-sized sing-alongs, oceans of light sticks, and an ARMY turnout that could rival any global city.  Of course, nothing’s official (yet), but the fact that Big Concerts is even floating the idea has fans convinced that something might be brewing. And judging by the response online, Jozi is more than ready to swap “Dlala Ka Yona” for “Dynamite” at full volume. For now, fans will have to watch Big Concerts’ channels closely for updates.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by BIG Concerts (@bigconcerts) What to know if BTS comes to South Africa The venues If BTS were to perform in South Africa, the obvious choices would be FNB Stadium in Johannesburg (capacity: 94,000) or DHL Stadium in Cape Town (capacity: 55,000). Both have hosted international mega-acts like Beyon
Witpoortjie Waterfall: Gold, ghosts, and legends

Witpoortjie Waterfall: Gold, ghosts, and legends

Just 30 km west of Johannesburg, nestled in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, lies the majestic Witpoortjie Waterfall. While its 70-metre cascade and resident Verreaux’s Eagles are sights to behold, there's another allure that draws visitors: a century-old legend of hidden treasure.  The Boer War gold rumour The tale begins during the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902), when a South African police constable (or possibly a mine manager) allegedly buried a stash of gold near the waterfall to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. This story or variations of it have been passed down through generations, with treasure hunters and locals speculating about its existence. The gold remains elusive despite numerous searches, adding to the waterfall's mystique. Ghostly whispers Adding to the intrigue, some claim that the area around the waterfall is haunted. Visitors have reported strange noises, fleeting shadows, and an eerie presence, especially during twilight hours. Whether it's the wind playing tricks or something more supernatural, the tales persist, enriching the waterfall's enigmatic reputation. A place of reflection Beyond the legends, Witpoortjie Waterfall offers a serene escape. Surrounded by lush vegetation and rocky outcrops, it's the perfect spot for magical moments in the city (think first dates, proposals or photoshoots) or simply pausing and soaking in nature's beauty. The gentle roar of the waterfall provides a calming backdrop, making it a favourite among local

Joburg is planting the seeds of food security with new farming initiative

Joburg is planting the seeds of food security with new farming initiative

Johannesburg has just taken a bold step towards a greener, more resilient future. The City of Johannesburg, through the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), has launched the Urban Agriculture Food Resilience Infrastructure Project, a city-wide initiative designed to boost community farming, empower smallholder farmers, and put nutritious food within reach of more Joburg residents. The project, rolled out in partnership with the City’s Social Development Department, recognises the urgent need to tackle food insecurity while also restoring dignity to communities most affected by poverty and hunger. At its core, it is a simple but powerful idea: give farmers the tools and infrastructure they need to succeed, and they’ll grow not only food but also stronger, more sustainable neighbourhoods. Building farms that last A lack of proper farming infrastructure has long held back smallholder farmers in the city. To change that, the initiative will bring vital upgrades to five sites across Johannesburg: Dannie Van Zyl, Diepkloof Skills Centre, Northern Farm, Eikenhof Farms, and Siyakhana Garden. Expect to see new fencing, agricultural tunnels, shipping containers, walk-in cold rooms, and water tank stands built at these sites. These features will improve yields, strengthen environmental compliance, and build resilience against climate change. Jobs for locals, by locals This isn’t just about farming; it’s also about creating opportunity. Four of the five sites will employ local labour d
