Broadway is getting a very starry group therapy session. Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, Sarah Paulson, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee and Isaac Powell are set to star in a Broadway production of Bess Wohl’s Small Mouth Sounds, the acclaimed play about a group of strangers at a silent meditation retreat to New York.
Directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, the play will begin previews February 18, 2027, before opening at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on March 18.

The play follows six people who retreat to a remote meditation center in the hopes of escaping (or at least avoiding) their various problems. As the retreat progresses, the participants are forced to confront what they came to escape. And because this is a meditation retreat, they’re supposed to do it quietly.

For Broadway, that group includes some extremely recognizable faces. Roberts and Rudd previously co-starred on Broadway in Three Days of Rain, while Paulson most recently starred on Broadway to Tony-winning effect in Appropriate. Powell has been seen on Broadway in Once On This Island and West Side Story, and while Lee is best known for her film work, she's been on Broadway in both The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee and La Bete. Small Mouth Sounds is Freeman's Broadway debut.
As David Cote wrote in his Time Out New York review of the 2016 Off Broadway production, "Silence is golden in Bess Wohl’s exquisite play set at an upstate meditation retreat where six strangers take (and mostly break) a vow not to speak. But baser metals also emerge from the vacuum of verbiage: When we don’t have everyday babble muting the noise in our heads, we risk drowning in an ocean of loneliness, grief and fear. The sight of deeply unhappy people trapped in a series of embarrassing situations makes Small Mouth Sounds one of the funnier sad plays you’re likely to see."
The Broadway run will feature sets by Tony winner Chloe Lamford, costumes by An D'Huys, lighting by Tony winner Jack Knowles and sound design by Tom Gibbons. Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw contributes the music, with movement by JA Collective.
