It’s Saltburn to the sounds of Jagger, Hozier, and a touch of ‘ma-i-a hi, ma-i-a hu…’

Standup comic and sitcom star Jack Whitehall breaks typecast in the new Amazon Prime Video series Malice, sharing screen space with David Duchovny as a charmingly manipulative manny who conspires against his wealthy employer family.

With a trailer soundtracked to The Turtles’ ‘Happy Together’ (which is having a resurgence this year with toxic romances like The Roses and Together), the six-episode miniseries captures familial tension, sexual uneasiness, and carefully-orchestrated discord to the sounds of Mick Jagger, Hozier, and even the annoyingly catchy ‘Ma-ia-hii, ma-ia-huu’ song.

And as Whitehall’s Adam devilishly breaks this family from within while drying out their dirty laundry, the tragicomic tone of the series is balanced with the multi-genre soundtrack.

As you can see from the tracklist, Malice is full of some all-too-familiar ballads like Leonard Cohen’s ‘Dance Me to the End of the Love’ (made famous in Al Pacino’s Scent of a Woman) and Jeff Buckley’s tearjerker ‘Hallelujah’ (itself a cover of a Cohen’s original). There’s a bit of that Mick Jagger and Doors groove with Massive Attack and Electric Light Orchestra scoring some crucial ending twists in episodes 2 and 3.

A particular music highlight in the third episode is when Carice van Houten’s character, designer socialite Nat Tanner, has too much drink and belts out the O-zone’s Romanian guilty pleasure ‘Dragostea Din Tei’ aka the ‘Ma-ia-hii, ma-ia-huu’ and ‘nu ma nu ma’ song.

Released back in 2003, ‘Dragoestea Din Tei’ is comparable to other one-hit wonders like ‘Gangnam Style’ and ‘Blue (Da Ba Dee)’ even though it continues to trend today through social media trends.

But Malice also offers some foot-tapping modern additions to your playlist. Take for instance ‘Just Cool’ by London-based Nigerian singer Obongjayar which plays while Adam is ardently packing his luggage while shuffling his phone playlist.

The song’s groovy bassline and Obongjayar’s insistent calls on ‘being cool’ already won the song a place in a poker scene in F1: The Movie earlier this year.

Comparisons with White Lotus are bound to made for Malice when it shifts from London to Greece where the uber-rich Tanner family vacation in a sea-facing retreat. Basking under the Mediterranean sun and dancing in Greek weddings also adds a Hellenic touch to the soundtrack with distinguished Greek songsmiths like Dimitris Mitropanos and Giannis Parios.
