Cheap and affordable booze

Someone's got to say it: Mumbai's an expensive city. Mumbai, incidentally, also happens to be a city of drinkers. And that goes hand in hand sometimes. The city’s home to some of the best upscale bars that have placed highly on award lists in India and even Asia, but sometimes, you just want to get a drink without burning a hole in your pocket. So where do true-blue Mumbaikars go when they really just want to drink?

Dive bars, of course. Spots that have stood the test of time not only because of cheap drinks, but also thanks to their radical refusal to cave to glossy decor and fancy avant-garde menus. You probably won't find cocktails here, but cheap beer, simple spirits, and a general sense of community-driven hilarity fight the good fight on weekday and weekend nights alike.

This is why they're not a haven for just locals. They’re places where you can make buddies with just about anybody. You can even throw up in the loo with zero judgement. In the guide below, we’ve sorted the good from the bad. You and your wallet are in safe hands.

The 7 best dive bars in Mumbai every local will swear by

  • Mumbai

For true lovers of the dive scene, stepping into Yacht comes with the instant realisation that you’ve found a true local refuge, and it’s a true delight best experienced on a Friday evening after work (or a long day of sightseeing). Though the lighting’s so dim you can barely make out any faces, the atmosphere’s electric, fuelled by a constant, satisfying hum of genuine connection. The alcohol is affordable, service is quick, and bar snacks are reliable, with great portion sizes.

Yacht’s a sacred establishment in Mumbai. Tables have regular customers, the staff know them by face, and you can witness real life unfolding here – laughter ringing out, low murmurs of after-hours work calls, and the sight of people so blissfully drunk they’re on the verge of passing out in the company of friends. It’s a wonderful, neat little cross-section of humanity.

The reputation of Sunlight in Kalbadevi rests entirely on two factors: the consistently cheap booze, and the music-fuelled ambience, making it the definitive college student's go-to spot for generations.

The bar’s ambience is dictated primarily by the legendary jukebox that plays Bollywood 2000s and contemporary hits. The music here is never background filler. It’s an active, high-energy soundtrack that defines the mood, and this cheap, joyous little tool’s behind the base of loyal customers that come from across Mumbai, with several folks even travelling from afar to enjoy an evening of sentimental nostalgia.

While the atmosphere might be described as charmingly ‘shady’, the bar never misses on the drinks and food. Chicken dishes, especially, are always a hit.

Dishes to try: Crispy Chicken, Chicken Lollipop

Price: ₹1,200-1,600 for two.

Timings: Daily. 9am-12 midnight.

Toto’s Garage is a time capsule. A glorious, cramped mess running on 90s fuel. It works because of its refusal to cave to modernity – so what you get is shoulder-to-shoulder chaos, retro rock screaming over the din, and that sense of grit and unbridled freedom is honestly why it’s survived the whackshow that’s Mumbai.

Look up and you see the famous decor: the waiters in overalls, the license plates, and the Volkswagen Beetle and Maruti van hanging overhead. They aren't props. They're defiant monuments. In fact, even when a section of the place was demolished a few years ago, the staff was said to have shivered minutely and gone on pouring drinks. The atmosphere resembles a permanent house party in a dimly lit garage, and if you don’t shout your order, your waiter’s going to walk right past you without giving a damn.

Dishes to try: Mutton or Chicken Kheema Pav, Chicken Wontons, Paneer Chilli

Price: ₹1,500-2,000 for two.

Timings: Daily. 6pm-1am.

Address: 7/8, Lourdes Haven, Pali, Junction, 30th Rd, Bandra West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400050

4. Janata Lunch Home

For those seeking dependability, Janata Lunch Home is where you go for real value. Not only has it stayed consistently cheap across economic ups and downs, but it’s also stayed so reliable that it’s become a sort of relic. The light’s a bit weird – it bathes the room in a colour reminiscent of the hospital, but we promise that visual oddity’s part of the vibe.

The bar is the main draw, obviously. You'll be sharing tables with people who have been coming here for nearly 15 years – and that brings with it conversations of past drunken revelry if you’re interested in listening, as well as the quiet knowledge that you’re in the right place. But to experience the restaurant in its full, unbridled glory, head to the air-conditioned section on the first floor. When a cricket match is on, forget about conversation up there. The patrons and staff alike have their eyes glued to the match, shouting and cheering as one.

Dishes to try: Bombil (Bombay Duck) Fry, Prawn Biriyani, Chicken Lollipop

Price: ₹1,200-1,500 for two.

Timings: Daily. 11am-1am.

Address: 78/A, Doctor BR Ambedkar Road, Pali Mala Rd, Bandra West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400050

5. Gokul Bar & Restaurant

For a fundamental experience of the Mumbai dive bar culture, visit Gokul. It operates on the street of the legends, sharing its cramped space with iconic late-night names like Bademiya and Baghdadi, making it a mandatory pre-game stop in Colaba. The booze is practically priced at retail prices – so you can imagine the crowd it draws. Students, lawyers, old-timers – it’s an eclectic mix, and therefore, it’s loud. And it only gets louder during the festive season, so plan your breathy conversations someplace else.

Remember the critical payment rule – From Friday to Sunday, they don’t accept online payments, so you must carry cash.

Dishes to try: Chicken Seekh Kebab, Masala Papad

Price: ₹1,200-1,400 for two.

Timings: Daily. 11am-12 midnight.

Address: Gokul Bar & Restaurant, Apollo Bandar, Colaba, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001

6. Shankari Bar & Restaurant

Shankari doesn’t quite care for fancy words like ambience. That’s a concept for the other side of town. Shankari’s the absolute utilitarian reality of the night. It’s a true dive (diva?) that embodies the zero-judgement clause of late hours. Sure, it kind of looks dodgy, the bulbs flicker dangerously low, yada yada yada, but the mission’s pure: to deliver the cheapest, most effective alcohol fix in Andheri West.

Here’s the real juice: the bar itself shuts at 1am, and is almost secondary to the real purpose. The magic, the unwritten law of the land, is the legendary 4.30am alcohol delivery hack – so you call them, you coordinate, and they’ll complete the circuit long after every other respectable establishment has shuttered. This actually isn’t even a recommendation. It’s an essential piece of local knowledge for when the city’s asleep, but you’re most definitely not.

Dishes to try: Chicken Tandoori, Sukka Chicken, Masala Chana

Price: ₹1,300-1,600 for two.

Timings: Daily. 11am-1am.

Address: Juhu Versova Link Rd, Kapaswadi, Andheri West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400053

7. 7 Hills

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Recommended

In Juhu, a neighborhood defined by exclusivity and five-star pricing, 7 Hills operates as an essential, calculated act of economic defiance. It stands in direct, unapologetic contrast to its wealthy surroundings, offering the city’s most affordable liquor in a zone where value-for-money’s an unheard of, and frankly, unwanted concept. And thus, of course, it’s a hideout for students and budget-conscious regulars.

Forget the purely functional setting. The amenities are basic and clean. You are here for the singular, reliable purpose of securing an inexpensive drink. The true trick of immersion lies in ignoring the expansive menu and going straight for the classic chakna, or bar snacks.

Dishes to try: Chakli with Schezwan Chutney, Chilli Chicken

Price: ₹1,200-1,400 for two.

Timings: Daily. 12 noon-1.30am.

Address: Juhu Supreme Shopping Centre, Shop No. 5, Gulmohar Cross Road No 9, Andheri West, JVPD Scheme, Juhu, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400053
