What does BAnQ stand for?
BAnQ stands for Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec.
The 33,000-square-metre building is organized into two multi-level wooden areas: one dedicated to Quebec’s heritage collection and the other to general lending and reference. A rhythmic screen of wooden slats creates a subtle division between the library stacks and the building’s more dynamic public spaces, balancing function with visual openness.
The building’s distinctive exterior is all translucent glass panels framed in copper, creating a luminous, almost jewel-like façade. Inside, a series of panoramic staircases and elevators forms the central circulation spine, while a sweeping promenade unfolds across multiple floors—connecting a succession of reading areas and offering striking views into the building and out across the city.
Abundant natural light filters through, illuminating warm wood interiors. The result is a space that feels both monumental and intimate—designed not simply to house knowledge, but to make the experience of discovering it part of the architecture itself.

In Montreal, BAnQ has three buildings:
- La Grande Bibliothèque (which is a library)
- Les Archives nationales à Montréal (which is one of the 10 archive centres in the BAnQ network)
- La Bibliothèque nationale (site Rosemont; which is a conservation centre)
