If you know your dumplings, chances are you’ll be familiar with the cult phenomenon that is Din Tai Fung. The Taiwanese chain founded in 1958 by a Chinese immigrant is famous for its xiao long bao (Shanghainese soup dumplings). These days it’s a global outfit with 170 sites around the world, including four – soon to be five – in London.
Din Tai Fung has revealed the location of its fifth London location. Soup dumplings, wontons and fried rice are thought to be coming to King’s Cross, as Din Tai Fung is reportedly in talks to open at the former site of Babel Beerhouse on Lewis Cubitt Walk. The beerhouse next to Lightroom closed in May before being snapped up by the dumpling chain.
The chain’s famous xiao long bao are traditionally made with a rich pork filling encased in a delicate wrapper that’s hand-folded at least 18 times. They also come stuffed with crab, chicken and truffle. It’s not unusual to see long queues outside the restaurants as people flock to try the famous dumplings.
Currently, you can visit Din Tai Fung restaurants in Canary Wharf, Covent Garden, Selfridges and Centre Point by Tottenham Court Road station. The opening date for Din Tai Fung King’s Cross hasn’t been revealed yet, and exact details of the restaurant are also still under wraps. When it arrives it will be in good company, joining the likes of Dishoom, Lina Stores and Barrafina in Coal Drops Yard.
