If you want to be assured of a restaurant’s quality, just look for it in the Michelin Guide. Composed of places that Michelin’s team of anonymous inspectors have given their seal of approval to, the guide is founded on rigorous criteria. Eateries are added to (and taken away from) the guide each month, and in October, 14 London restaurants proved their merit.

Before we get into the new additions, let’s remind you of the criteria. The main pillars of a Michelin-selected restaurant are: quality of ingredients, harmony of flavours, mastery of techniques, personality of the chef as expressed in the dishes, and consistency.

Tiella in Bethnal Green is one of Time Out’s top two restaurants in the city right now and nearly a year after opening, it’s got a Michelin mention. Our food critic Leonie Cooper reported that the food on offer at this trattoria is ‘knockout’, with signatures like chicken Milanese (pictured below) and lesser-eaten Italian fare like anchovies in saor and passatelli in brodo.

Fellow Time Out favourite (number 11 in our ranking and number one in our Soho list) Impala was also initiated into the guide last month. We gave it five stars for its ‘colossal, ambitious menu’ of north African dishes. Michelin similarly said that the ‘menu is filled with so many enticing options’ from sharing dishes like birds’ tongue pasta and spiced oxtail or monkfish wrapped in grape leaves.

Hackney’s Teal by Sally Abé earned a spot in Michelin’s guide for its ‘fun, friendly service’ and ‘dishes rooted in British classics’; Covent Garden taverna Zylia was added thanks to its dedication to and excellent execution of traditional Greek and Cypriot cuisine, and the newly opened Trèsind was praised for its ‘subtle, sultry kind of contemporary style’. Peckham’s Levan, which has been around since 2018, finally got its flowers from Michelin for ‘dishes that are hearty, wholesome and burst with natural flavours’, with the extra appeal of a stellar wine list and vibey soundtrack.
