There’s no shortage of places to take in the amazing views in Lisbon (check out our guide to the city’s best viewpoints), but let’s be honest – wouldn’t you rather soak up those vistas with a drink in your hand? If the answer is a resounding yes, then this list is for you.

After all, while the word rooftop isn’t actually recognised by the Priberam dictionary (your options in Portugal are rosto, rotos or rolitos), it is becoming increasingly common in Lisbon slang, especially with the many, many rooftop sunset parties popping up all over the city. Our team over at Time Out Lisbon left their fear of heights at ground level and climbed up to the rooftops of hotels, shopping centres and car parks to pick out the best rooftop bars in Lisbon.

Best rooftop bars in Lisbon

1. Rossio Gastrobar

The Altis Avenida took advantage of the hotel’s expansion to create a new gastrobar with a terrace up on the seventh floor, complete with comfortable armchairs and a view over Rossio Square, the castle, the Santa Justa Lift, and the river in the distance. The menu features seasonal products, mostly from Portugal.

Address: Altis Avenida Hotel, Rua 1 de Dezembro 118, 1200-360 Lisbon

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 12.30pm-3pm, 7pm-11pm

  • Santa Maria Maior

Attracting a crowd of born and bred Lisbonites, newer Lisbon residents from all over the world, and tourists just passing through the city, this is the perfect place to watch the sunset and have a drink in a chilled-out setting. The view rivals that of many viewpoints, and the service is more laid-back than in most hotel bars.

Address: Hotel Mundial, Praça Martim Moniz 2, 1100-341 Lisbon

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 3pm-11pm

  • Oeiras

This stepmother’s table is a generous one – she’s keen to prove she’s a good host. From the kitchen come timeless classics like flaky meat pastries and runny eggs with cured ham. The pasta dishes are made with the same fresh pasta already used in the group’s other restaurants, while the pizzas bear the signature touch of Luiz André Alvim from Bike Bakery. There’s a terrace out front made for long sunny days, and a rooftop bar that practically demands a toast at sunset.

Address: Rua Rodrigues Faria 103, 1300-501 Lisbon

Opening hours: Monday and Thursday-Sunday 12-2.30pm, 7.30-10.30pm, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays

  • Nightlife
  • SĂŁo Vicente

The most famous nightclub in the city – and, to be honest, in the country – opened its doors on 29 September 1998, the penultimate day of Expo 98. Manuel Reis, the owner, had already opened Frágil in Bairro Alto and continued one of Lisbon nightlife’s greatest legacies in this new spot. To this day, Lux Frágil regularly hosts top DJs every week. Hold out until dawn and head to the balcony, where you can catch the sunrise. We promise it’s worth it.

Address: Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, Armazém A, Cais da Pedra, 1900-436 Lisbon

Opening hours: Thursday-Saturday 11pm-6am, closed Sunday-Wednesday

5. Carmo Rooftop

When it comes to the setting, Carmo Rooftop offers panoramic views over Lisbon and a perfect vantage point to admire the Santa Justa Lift. Trust us – it’s a beauty at night. The drinks menu features classic cocktails alongside house specials. In summer, open-air cinema sessions take place here, courtesy of the Cine Society.

Address: Terraços do Carmo, Largo do Carmo, 1200-092 Lisbon

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 12pm-10pm

  • Nightlife
  • SĂŁo Vicente

Right by Santa Apolónia, this spot overlooks the Tagus and stands out for its tropical décor and eclectic programme, which includes music, film, photography, painting, visual arts and stand-up comedy. There’s also a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, plus pasta, pizzas, burgers and steak sandwiches – and a weekend brunch to round it all off.

Address: Rua de Santa Apolónia 59, 1100-468 Lisbon

Opening hours: Wednesday-Thursday 6pm-2am, Friday 6pm-3am, Saturday 5pm-3am, Sunday 5pm-2am, closed Mondays and Tuesdays

7. Tutto Passa

At Lisbon’s Cais do Sodré, on the top floor of a coworking building, you’ll find Tutto Passa, where you can come for lunch or dinner, but also grab a drink on the rooftop and stay for the party. In fact, if you prefer, you can swap the table for a beanbag and eat at the bar. There’s pasta, risotto, gnocchi, pizza and tiramisu, all made with ingredients sourced straight from Italy. The evenings tend to be lively – every Thursday there are DJ sets, as well as on the last Friday of the month, when two DJs take turns behind the decks: the first from 7pm-midnight, the second from midnight-4am.

Address: Rua da Cintura do Porto de Lisboa, Armazém B, 1200-109 Lisbon

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 12.30pm-3pm, 7.30pm-12am, closed Mondays

  • Cocktail bars
  • Avenida da Liberdade/PrĂncipe Real

On the eighth floor of a building on Rua Castilho, just steps from Avenida da Liberdade, Level Eight stands out for its views over Eduardo VII Park, the Botanical Garden and Lisbon’s rooftops. Spanning 350 square metres and enclosed by glass panels, the space offers a menu of cocktails, gin, wine, beer and a few snacks.

Address: Rua Castilho 14C, 1250-066 Lisbon

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 5pm-12am, closed Sunday and Monday

9. IDB Lisboa

From the top of the old Entreposto building, at the entrance to Moscavide, there’s an open, panoramic view over eastern Lisbon, stretching from Parque das Nações to the airport. It’s now home to IDB Lisbon – Innovation & Design Building Lisbon, a rooftop space that brings together culture, sport and food.

Address: Avenida Infante Dom Henrique 333H, 1800-282 Lisbon

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 12pm-10pm, closed Mondays

  • Chiado
  • Recommended

Hotel do Chiado opened nearly two decades ago, and with it came the Entretanto Rooftop Bar – which pretty much immediately became a must-visit spot in the city. All you need to do is head up to the seventh floor, walk down the corridor and arrive at this elevated oasis. Just in case, bring some sunscreen – and cool off with a Moscow Mule.

Address: Hotel do Chiado, Rua Nova do Almada 114, 1200-290 Lisbon

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 12pm-10pm
