As if the post-summer melancholy of the ‘September effect’ wasn’t enough to deal with, Bangkok’s weather is about to take a dramatic turn. While Typhoon Ragasa isn't making a direct landfall in Thailand – it's currently heading towards Hong Kong after passing the Philippines – it’s powerful enough to supercharge the southwest monsoon hovering over the country. For Bangkok, that means one thing: rain. A lot of it.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rain across the capital and its surrounding provinces from Tuesday September 23 to Friday September 26.

According to the TMD, thunderstorms are expected to cover roughly 60 percent of the metropolitan area, with daytime temperatures hovering between 32–35C before cooling to 25–27C at night. This much rain means flash floods, water pooling in low spots and soggy shoes. Areas near canals, rivers or just poor drainage should be on alert.

If you’re in a flood-prone neighborhood, it’s smart to stock up on essentials, follow updates and plan your routes carefully. Traffic will probably slow to a crawl, so leave earlier than usual and maybe skip the outdoor activity plans. Even though Bangkok is inland, the Chao Phraya River could swell and nearby waterways may rise too.

For travelers with flights booked, consider this your notice. Thai Airways International (THAI) has said some flights between September 22-24 could be affected as Ragasa passes Taiwan and Hong Kong. Check your flight status before you pack your bags.

The silver lining? It’s the perfect excuse to embrace the great indoors. Binge that series you've been putting off, order in your favourite comfort food, and enjoy some quality time at home.

Stay safe and dry, Bangkok!
