Inspired by Tokyo’s Jimbocho, the BKK Book District initiative is turning historic streets into a paradise for independent readers

For book lovers, there's nothing quite like spending an afternoon browsing independent bookshops, getting recommendations from passionate owners and stumbling upon your next favourite read. We clearly get this, which is why we’re inviting you to get to know BKK Book District.
You know how Tokyo has Jimbocho Book Town, where you can spend hours hopping between vintage bookshops and literary cafes? Or how Ho Chi Minh City has its Book Street lined with stalls and stores? Bangkok's getting its own version, and it's about time.
Here's what makes it interesting though. This isn't just about slapping a 'book district' label on an area and calling it a day. The team hunts down hidden bookshops that locals might not even know exist, then brings them together so readers can actually discover them. You'll be able to wander from one shop to another, chat with owners who know their stuff and meet other people who are into the same obscure poetry collections or graphic novels as you.
The first area they're focusing on is Fuang Nakhon district, which makes total sense when you know the history. This neighbourhood used to be packed with printing houses and bookshops back in the day, and there are still some brilliant independent stores tucked away waiting to be rediscovered.
The project's got backing from Creative Economy Agency, Office of Knowledge Management and Development and The Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand, along with actual bookshop owners and publishers who want to see the area thrive again. They're planning activities and events to get people exploring the district properly.
Keep tabs on BKK Book District's updates if you fancy being part of Bangkok's first literary quarter as it develops. Could be your new weekend hangout spot.
