Taophiphon Bar Project on Charoen Rat Road in Wongwian Yai comes with a story few Bangkok beer bars can match. Owner Taophiphon Limjitrakorn was a homebrewer who was arrested for making his own beer before going on to become an MP and push the Progressive Liquor Act. The selection runs to more than 200 beers across tap, bottle and can, alongside community spirits and Thai sato rice wine. The taps are cleaned every fortnight – not glamorous, perhaps, but exactly the sort of detail serious beer drinkers appreciate. Board games and live music keep things informal, and on the right night Taophiphon himself may be behind the bar talking beer and politics.
139 Charoen Rat Road, Khlong San. Open Wednesday-Monday, 5pm-midnight. Call 065-098-5895.
