Black Rock City

Black Rock City is the rare festival that makes the temporary feel like the point. For one week in the Nevada desert, Burning Man's sprawling metropolis is built from scratch by the people who live there, with art, workshops, performances and demonstrations woven into daily life. The Smithsonian's inclusion of Black Rock City in its 2026 Festival of Festivals puts that culture in a wider frame, treating the gathering as a living example of how festivals can create community rather than simply entertain it. That distinction is worth keeping in mind if you've mostly encountered Burning Man through its spectacular images. The more interesting story is the collective work behind them: radical self-expression alongside radical self-reliance, with participants helping make the place rather than simply consuming it. This year's gathering runs August 30 through September 7, giving the experiment another week to take shape in the desert.
