Quicksand's influence on post-hardcore is easy to appreciate in retrospect, but hearing the band live is a better reminder of why their sound mattered in the first place. The New York group arrives at 9:30 Club with Bring On The Psychics, a new record that keeps the dense, groove-heavy force of its ’90s work while pushing further into experimentation. That balance is what makes this tour especially appealing: Quicksand are not simply recreating the sound of Slip or Manic Compression, but neither are they treating those records as something to outgrow. Soul Blind opens, bringing its own blend of hardcore, metal and ’90s alternative rock to the bill. For listeners who like their heavy music with texture and movement rather than pure velocity, this is a particularly strong pairing.
