National Symphony Orchestra: Hook in Concert

Hook gets the full live-to-picture treatment at Wolf Trap, where the National Symphony Orchestra performs John Williams's Grammy-nominated score alongside the entire 1991 film on screen. The 35th anniversary gives the screening a useful excuse, but the score is the real reason to make the trip. Williams's music moves from the bright, swashbuckling themes of Neverland to darker passages around Captain Hook, with plenty of playful details that can get flattened on a home sound system. Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts supply the familiar movie magic, but hearing the orchestra perform underneath it changes the balance, making the music feel like an equal part of the story. The September 5 performance starts at 7:30pm, with gates opening at 6pm, and Wolf Trap's lawn setup lets you bring a picnic and drinks for the evening.
