Big D & The Kids Table have been at this ska-punk thing for more than three decades, but their new record, The Good Ole American Saturday Night, suggests they have little interest in coasting on nostalgia. The album moves between punchy ska-punk, reggae grooves and big singalong choruses, with "Whiplash," "Right Now" and "Scatterbrain" making a strong case for hearing the newer material alongside the older favorites. The September 3 stop at Songbyrd also gets a useful pairing in Matamoska, the Los Angeles ska band joining Big D throughout this stretch of the tour. For longtime fans, this is a chance to hear a veteran act still adding to its repertoire rather than simply replaying it. And for anyone who thinks ska-punk peaked decades ago, the new album gives Big D a pretty good argument to reconsider.
