Welcome to the Historic Morgue. This nationally recognised building has had many lives, serving as a morgue, funeral home, church and museum. The current decor plays with that history, scattering antique funeral pieces in with a modern twist throughout. It’s set up loft-style with a king bed, a full-size bed, a single and an antique settee all sharing one room, plus a claw-foot tub from the early 1900s in the bathroom. Numerous professional paranormal research teams have spent the night here and reported unexplained activity, and the host provides some of their own investigation equipment, a spirit box, EMF detector and dowsing rods, if you fancy doing your own digging.

Time Out tip: The host is upfront that there are no refunds if you leave mid-stay, ghost related or otherwise, so this one’s for guests who are unfazed by hauntaunts. It’s also a short walk to downtown Ozark and the Finley River, worth pairing with a daytime wander if the morgue gets to be a bit much.

Are you ready to step into the Upside Down? This is the actual filming location for the Byers house from Stranger Things, and it’s been transformed into a fully immersive stay inspired by Hawkins circa 1983. It took over a year and dozens of fans and professionals to curate every VHS tape, vinyl record and board game inside and the result is detail-obsessed, right down to the interactive Christmas light wall modelled on the Byers’ living room and a CRT TV playing period-accurate tapes. It’s a fan-driven project and not an official Netflix property, but the team behind it are clearly obsessed with getting it right.

Time Out tip: It's just 15 to 20 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport and 10 minutes from Trilith Studios, so it’s an easy add-on if you’re already in Atlanta. Just know all guests and vehicles need to be registered with the host ahead of arrival, and there’s a strict no-parties policy backed up by noise monitors and security cameras.

After a fire in 1899 destroyed this Victorian-era brothel, casino, and saloon, the space was rebuilt and meticulously restored, bringing spirited supernatural stories. Legend claims the Victorian Gothic building's electrical wiring was done by Nikolas Tesla. Its bay windows, oak doors, 12- to 15-foot ceilings, and hardwood stairs are all original. The ghost who lives here is said to be a former miner who died in a gunfight. Equally creepy are some of the taxidermy and art the current owners have added.

Time Out tip: The building sits right next to the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum in this Rocky Mountain gold rush town. It’s worth a wander if you want the full backstory before you spend the night in a home that has one of its own.

Prepare yourself for the possibility of spotting multiple apparitions: the host of David Stewart Farm says she’s seen plenty over the years, but promises they’re all friendly. Guests have reported hearing footsteps and seeing men dressed in Confederate soldier uniforms. The bedroom itself is decked out in period decor to really put you in the 19th-century frame of mind, if that’s your style.

Time Out tip: The property sits on 100 acres with hiking and mountain biking trails and a pond stocked with bass, sunfish and catfish, so bring a rod if you fancy it. Just know you'll be sharing the kitchen and living room with the host, her dog and five cats, so it's not a fully private stay.

Time Out tip: The host also books the property for daytime paranormal investigations, ceremonies and photo shoots, so if a simple overnight stay isn’t spooky enough, ask about renting the space for an event too. After a fire destroyed the original 1857 property, ’the castle’, as the owners called it, went through an extensive restoration. But the stone manor’s spectral residents didn’t much appreciate the changes, and a string of bad luck followed its living ones—including the death of a child as well as the family’s patriarch. Recently, guests have reported plenty of ghostly activity in the mansion, like the time someone spotted a child hanging from a chandelier.

This adorable cottage in Bisbee, Arizona has all the charm you’d want out of an affordable Airbnb retreat – and some mysterious ghostly activity to boot. The listing doesn’t go into much detail about what exactly haunts the gingerbread house, but repeated episodes of odd, unexplained mischief have been reported (though nothing scary or malevolent... so far). Luckily, the place is pet-friendly, so feel free to bring along Fido to protect you from whatever awaits in Bisbee.

Although the 130-year-old Parks-Bowman Mansion in NOLA's Garden District offers multiple rooms, there’s only one room that’s supposedly haunted by a shy ghost, thought to be the youngest daughter of the house's original owners, who was buried on the grounds in the 1890s after her untimely death. Of course, you may or may not actually encounter the youngster or hear her pacing the grounds with a slight limp, softly humming lullabies, or hiding pairs of glasses.

Time Out tip: You’re a short walk from Lafayette Cemetery, Commander’s Palace and the St Charles Avenue streetcar line, and if you’re visiting for Mardi Gras, you’ll be steps from the parade route. Just know cooking isn’t permitted in the kitchen, you get access for drinkware and ice only, so plan to eat out.

And the Victorian era hotel certainly looks the part (why it is called ‘Queen Anne’ and not ‘Queen Victoria’ is slightly confusing but we’ll stop splitting straws). Originally a Girls’ Finishing School, the place is full of gothicky, deep-hued furnishings and opportunities to, for example, take sherry in the parlor. Its otherworldly resident is said to be the former Headmistress. Better make sure you’re not misbehaving, eh?

Time Out tip: Evening tea and sherry service happens nightly in the fireplace parlor and library, complete with a baby grand piano, so time your check-in so you don't miss out on the hotel's best ritual.

One-up America’s most haunted Airbnbs by staying in a Texas ghost town. Once a mining boomtown, just about everyone but the ghosts have long since moved on from Terlingua. In this 100-year-old miner's casita, you’ll find a bedroom, living room, kitchen, and outdoor bathroom (a scary situation in itself). Watch for paranormal activity from the porch of this stacked limestone cabin, which luckily has lovely views of Big Bend National Park's mountains and badlands.

Location: Salem, Massachusetts (McIntire District)

It’s fitting that the town where the 17th century Salem Witch Trials took place would have plenty of historic haunted mansions. The Henry Derby House is no exception. Built for tailor Henry Derby, the 19th-century Greek Revival rental home is now owned by Phil Marchand, who grew up in the haunted home. He and others have heard footsteps from the third floor, have been startled by bumps in the night and many guests have spotted the ghost of a teenage girl with long hair.

Location: Seguin, Texas (Historic Downtown District)

Another well and truly haunted property in Texas, the Magnolia B&B has been featured on a host of spooky television series. In fact, it’s such a big presence in ghostly hotel circles, it’s even got its own book on the subject. The place itself was built in 1850 as a frontier-hotel-stagecoach-stop-saloon-restaurant-brothel (quite the multipurpose venue). The current owners really lean into its status as a place to meet those who dwell in the afterlife, giving you ample opportunities for learning lots about your spooky neighbors.

Time Out tip: Filming for social media isn’t allowed on the second floor without written permission in advance, so if you’re planning a ghost-hunting video, message the hosts before you book. For an extra $20 a person, you can also add a guided daytime tour of the downstairs and basement, which isn’t otherwise included in your stay.
