If you're going to announce your hit Broadway play is coming to HBO Max, then you'd better enlist some HBO heavy-hitters to help make the announcement. And if you're NYC theatre darling Cole Escola, you go straight to the top: Sarah Jessica Parker herself.
That's Parker—in her Vivienne Westwood suit jacket from the "A Vogue Idea" episode of Sex and the City, FYI—behind the HBO reception desk in the new teaser announcing that Oh, Mary!, Escola’s gloriously unhinged take on Mary Todd Lincoln, is officially coming to the HBO streaming service in 2027. (And yes, that's Cynthia Nixon offering Escola a water.)
The HBO special is a filmed version of the July 28, 2026, performance at London’s Trafalgar Theatre, with Escola reprising their Tony Award-winning performance as Mary Todd Lincoln. Sam Pinkleton, who won a Tony for directing the Broadway production, is also behind the camera. The cast includes Olivier Award winner Giles Terera as Mary’s Husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s Chaperone, Tony Macht as Mary’s Husband’s Assistant and Emmy nominee Michael Urie as Mary’s Teacher.

Written by Escola, the 80-minute, one-act comedy imagines Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks before her husband’s assassination as a deeply miserable, booze-soaked broad desperate to escape the suffocating confines of the White House.
HBO executive Nina Rosenstein called the production “80 minutes of meticulously choreographed chaos,” praising its originality and saying she was thrilled to bring Escola and Pinkleton’s creation to HBO. Escola, naturally, had a slightly different reaction to the idea of spreading the show to a massive television audience: “Knowing about OH, MARY! is the first step in getting rid of it.”
The show opened Off Broadway in January 2024 before moving to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre that July. It quickly became one of Broadway’s biggest comedy hits, eventually becoming the first production in the theater’s 121-year history to gross more than $1 million in a single week. It subsequently became the first show of the 2024–25 Broadway season to recoup its investment. The production also won Tonys for Escola and Pinkleton.
Meanwhile, Oh, Mary! has taken its particular brand of historical revisionism overseas, opening in London’s West End in December 2025 and extending its run at the Trafalgar Theatre through January 2027.
A North American tour is also underway, with stops including San Francisco, Boston and Detroit. Now Mary Todd Lincoln can add another venue to her résumé: your living room.
