If you were around in the early aughts, you remember regularly seeing messy photos of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Britney Spears and many other young women who were plastered across the covers of tabloid magazines at the grocery store. Captured in some of their worst and most intimate moments, these magazines profited off what salacious photos they could publish of these female celebrities. They basically grew up and made all their mistakes in front of the camera—and we were there to witness.
Inspired by the book TOXIC: Women, Fame and the Tabloid 2000s by Sarah Ditum, Hilton and her production company, 11:11 Media, will take a look behind those notorious cover photos in The It Girls: Inside the 2000s (a working title). We will learn about what exactly was going on behind the scenes of the women in the photos with rich archival footage, never-before-seen conversations and new intimate, revealing interviews.

“The documentary will deliver the era audiences are still obsessed with—the fashion, the flash, the chaos, the iconic headlines—and reframe every image of it as evidence of the good, the bad, and everything in between,” Roku announced. “This is the exclusive scoop behind the scoop, straight from the women who lived it.”
Hilton is obviously one of those women. Great-granddaughter of Hilton Hotels founder, she was NYC’s “It Girl” in 2001 and by 2003 was on her own reality TV series The Simple Life with her fellow famous friend Nicole Richie. In 2003, a sex tape with Hilton's then-boyfriend Rick Salomon was leaked—later released as 1 Night in Paris (2004)—which took her fame to another level. Hilton and her peers set trends, inspired whole personalities and shocked us with their humanity (and inhumanity) in front of the camera.
“The early 2000s changed everything about what it meant to be famous, and who better to talk about those moments than the women who lived it,” Hilton says in a statement. “We were living in a world where the cameras were always on, the headlines were everywhere, and there was no playbook for what came next.
“Looking back now, it’s crazy to see how much that era shaped the celebrity culture we know today. It was incredibly exciting but also complicated,” she continues. “We were basically the original influencers before there was even a word for it. I love that we can now revisit those moments from our own perspective and show how the women who were once the subjects of the headlines became the authors of their own narratives.”
The documentary is also produced by EverWonder Studio and Hi Mom Productions. Paris Hilton, Bruce Gersh, Bruce Robertson, Joanna Studebaker, Jon Adler, Amanda Spain, Missy Walker, Andrea Metz, Michelle Peerali and Sarah Ditum serve as executive producers.
It will exclusively launch on The Roku Channel in 2027.
