Only 25 theaters across the country are showing the sci-fi epic the way Denis Villeneuve intended it to be seen.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three is coming to theaters this December (though "Dune Insider" screenings have already gone on sale and caused quite the commotion this week). And if you're going to spend two hours and 20 minutes watching Timothée Chalamet get tyrannical and giant sandworms terrifyingly slither around, you should do it on the biggest screen possible.
RECOMMENDED: The best sci-fi movies of all time, ranked
The third and final installment of Villeneuve's Dune trilogy opens December 18, and the film will be available in the ultra-rare IMAX 70mm format at just 25 theaters across the U.S.—meaning, yes, you may have to travel if you want the full cinephile experience. Here's everything you need to know.
If you can! The format uses 15-perforation 70mm film, allowing for a giant image with a 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Villeneuve shot Dune: Part Three for IMAX, making the format particularly appropriate for a movie whose primary visual philosophy seems to be "what if everything were enormous?"
And FYI: The initial wave of IMAX 70mm tickets went on sale months ahead of the movie's release, and demand was predictably feral. IMAX has also announced special early "Insider Screening" performances for December 14 and 15, before the film's December 18 wide release.
Because your average movie theater these days is probably not capable of projecting this format. As the industry shifted toward digital projection over the past two decades, the complex equipment and specialized projectionists needed for 70mm film fell by the wayside.
Only 25 theaters in the entire United States have the proper equipment to show films in native IMAX 70mm (see our rundown below for the location closest to you). As more movies utilize the format—including The Odyssey—demand has become so overwhelming that many showtimes sell out months in advance.
If you're fortunate enough to live near one of these select venues, seeing Dune: Part Three in IMAX 70mm is an unmatched cinematic event worth seeking out. But if a 70mm theater is hours away, don't worry: Standard digital and standard IMAX presentations still offer stunning visuals alongside the phenomenal performances. You'll see the exact same movie—just with a slightly cropped frame.
