There’s nothing quite like getting up in the morning just to sit in bumper to bumper traffic or squeeze onto a stuffy bus for your morning commute. Not convinced? Well, if you live in this UK university town, it might be time to stop stalling and invest in a bicycle (or a ‘velocipede’, if you’re feeling incredibly posh) to scoot around.
Thanks to modern urban policies that are leading to greener streets and more pedestrian-friendly zones with fewer cars, plenty of the world's best cities are primed for zipping around on two wheels. But while famous bike havens like Amsterdam and Copenhagen usually hog the cycling spotlight, it turns out Cambridge has out-pedalled them all.
So, how exactly do we know that Cambridge is the place for a two-wheeled joyride? As part of our annual city survey, we asked over 24,000 urbanites across the globe to rate the ease of cycling in their hometowns. Cambridge rode away with a cycling score of 83.2 percent, topping the list. Firstly, its flat-as-a-pancake geography and relatively dry weather mean you won’t be tackling any dreaded, thigh-burning hills. Better yet, you won't arrive at your destination completely sodden from sweat or rain, which is always a perk.
But it’s not just a lucky twist of nature. Thanks to the compact layout of the city and some innovative urban planning including a multi-story bike park right at the train station and designated ‘cycle streets’, one third of all journeys here are taken by bike. No wonder more than 83 percent of the locals we spoke to agree that life is simply better on two wheels. Time to get pedalling.
