This legendary Scottish hotel has been named the 100th best in the world

This luxury hotel has secured a spot on the World’s 50 Best Hotels longlist for the third year in a row. 

If you’re not already familiar with it, Gleneagles is a lavish 232-room country house at the base of Scotland’s Southern Highlands. With live piano, Michelin-starred dining and cocktails by candlelight, it offers a glamorous and romantic recess starting at £536 a night. It placed 100th in the annual ranking.  

World’s 50 Best has described the hotel as the ‘epitome of ultra-luxe country house hospitality’, with the welcoming atmosphere created by their staff being a highlight. 

Gleneagles’ estate rooms boast views across the expansive greenery, and even the smallest bedrooms have a king-sized bed. There’s plenty to do across its 850 acres, from golf on three championship courses to salmon fishing in the River Tee. It’s not all active, though, as the Spa at Gleneagles is well equipped with 20 treatment rooms, a steam room, a hot sauna cabin and a vitality pool. 

Both World’s 50 Best and Time Out editor Leonie Cooper have described The American Bar, one of three onsite bars, as a standout facility, ‘where you can casually quaff high-octane tipples from a menu centred around botanicals grown and foraged on the hotel’s estate’. Designed as a tribute to the 1920s – the hotel’s opening decade – guests are encouraged to dress up in their finest outfits to drink floral cocktails by the fireplace.

The rest of the longlist features La Réserve Paris in the top spot, which is an intimate 35-room hotel just a stone’s throw from the Champs-Elysées. With a view of the Eiffel Tower from an 150-year-old classic Haussmannian building, it’s tough to beat. The only other UK hotel to make the cut was the Rosewood London. 

There’s also two spots in Los Angeles – The Beverly Hills Hotel, which sits in spot number 65, and Hotel Bel-Air, in place 57 – both of which Time Out’s own Leonie Cooper has reviewed. With the former an ‘impressively chic’ celebrity hotspot and the later the ‘embodiment of Old Hollywood glamour’, it is no surprise they made the list.
