From a gatehouse in Wales to a Georgian home in Wiltshire, these are the spookiest rentals in the UK right now

BOO! Halloween is next weekend. We don’t mean to frighten you, but if you haven’t sorted how you’ll mark the occasion yet, you could be haunted for all of eternity. One option would be to host your own Traitors-style evening with friends, and these incredibly spooky rentals could be the perfect setting.
The data has been crunched, and the four spookiest Airbnbs across the UK have been summoned. They were chosen in part for how many times the word ‘haunted’ was mentioned in the reviews — so if you see a ghost during your stay, don’t say we didn’t warn you. These homes, from a gatehouse in Wales to a Georgian home in Wiltshire, are officially the spookiest.

For bone-chilling spookiness, nothing compares to spending the night in the official ‘Haunted Bedroom’ at Essex's legendary Talliston House & Gardens. It was designed with Scottish Art Noveau in mind and to mimic the bedroom of an Edwardian child. There’s a four-poster bed with red curtains, black wooden panelling and plenty of eerie vintage toys and antique books. The room is low lit with candles on the wall and mood lighting.
Host John Tarrow said: ‘On two separate occasions, around three years apart, guests have described the same unexplained occurrence at our Talliston listing, including specific details that were identical.
‘I’ve never revealed what happened - I’m waiting to see if a third guest reports the same thing. If they do, it might be enough to make me rethink what I thought I knew about the universe. We do not attest that the house is haunted, but such incidents are indeed a pause for thought.’

York is already a place that’s steeped in medieval history, and the perfect setting for some witchy magic. This townhouse next to the York Racecourse sleeps four people and seems ordinary from the outside. But step inside and you’ll find a home inspired by Harry Potter’s world of witchcraft and wizardry. One of the bedrooms, complete with bunk beds and red curtains, has envelopes splattered across the wall, perhaps inviting guests to join Hogwarts. The bathroom is tiled in a Slytherin shade of dark green and there’s even a large black cauldron next to the fireplace.

Situated on the banks of the River Avon in Wiltshire, you can step back in time by staying at this grand 1835, which sleeps up to 12 people. The huge three-storey home with tall ceilings comes with heavy marble hearths and a creaky staircase. In the morning, you’ll be treated to misty views over the river Avon toward Salisbury Cathedral.

Monmouthshire in Wales is an area where centuries of folklore have bred no shortage of ghost stories. So staying in this 700-year-old castle gatehouse, which amazingly comes with an EV charger, seems fitting for Halloween. Dating back to 1270, the Grade II-listed fortress has ancient stone-framed windows and a steep, twisting spiral staircase leading up into the shadows. Climb to the top of the lookout tower and you’ll find views stretching for miles toward the Brecon Beacons.
