It’s been a gala year for the UK’s cinema – at least, by recent standards – with smash-hit releases like The Odyssey, Obsession and Spider-Man: Brand New Day packing in the crowds and more big blockbusters ahead before Christmas.

And for five of Britain’s indie picture houses, there’s been more good news: the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) has just shortlisted them for its Cinema of the Year award.

Oxford’s much-loved The Ultimate Picture Palace, which has launched a campaign to secure its long-term future, is one of five cinemas vying for the title of Britain’s best at next month’s BIFAs ceremony.

Also up for the award are Suffolk’s three-screen Abbeygate Cinema, Bo’ness’s historic Hippodrome Cinema, Lincoln’s cricket pavilion-turned-cinema The Kinema in the Woods, and Welwyn Garden City’s three-screener Campus West.

The full list of nominees is:

  • Abbeygate Cinema, Bury St Edmunds
  • Campus West, Welwyn Garden City
  • Hippodrome Cinema, Bo’ness
  • The Kinema in the Woods, Woodhall Spa
  • The Ultimate Picture Palace, Oxford

Nearly 50,000 people voted for their favourite cinemas in this year’s BIFA Cinema of the Year award.

The winner will be picked by a BIFA jury and announced at the awards ceremony on December 6.
