It’s no secret that Scotland is home to several of the most stunning landscapes in not just the UK but in the world. Time Out’s guide to the most beautiful places to visit in the UK right now features no fewer than four Scottish locations, including the likes of ‘artists’ town’ and fishing village Kirkcudbright and the Isle of Skye’s Fairy Pools.
But which Scottish locale is the most beautiful of them all? Well, the highest-ranking north-of-Hadrian’s-Wall place in the list was Glen Coe. While not exactly a hidden secret – it’s the long-established home of Scottish mountaineering – the dramatic glacial valley in the Highlands is truly worth the fuss.
Time Out’s news and features editor Ed Cunningham said about Glen Coe: ‘No amount of hype can prepare you for this mighty, majestic valley. The A82 north from Glasgow and the Trossachs is surely one of the most jaw-dropping roads in Britain, opening out with views of Glen Coe’s rounded peaks and sweeping glacial half-mile-wide crevasse.
‘There’s a reason the route has so many places for cars to park in and embrace the vista.’
There are plenty of stunning sites to visit in Glen Coe, including driving down Glen Etive Road to take in its river pools and waterfalls, hiking the 2.5 mile trail of the Lost Valley and riding a chairlift up to Glencoe Mountain Resort for panoramic views of Rannoch Moor. Famous hiking sights include Bidean nam Bian massif’s famous ‘Three Sisters of Glen Coe’, Aonach Eagach’s ‘Devil’s Staircase’ and the ‘peak of the mountains’ Meall a' Bhùiridh.
Tenby in Wales topped Time Out’s latest ranking of the most beautiful spots in the UK was topped by Tenby. The Welsh seaside town, with its coastline lined with Georgian and Victorian townhouses painted in baby blues, buttery yellows and pale pinks, was called ‘a halcyon dream of the Great British Seaside’ by Time Out’s travel editor Grace Beard.
