The most beautiful place in England is a spellbinding island that can only be reached at certain times of the day

All of us have considered ditching civilisation and escaping to a remote island once or twice. Turns out, that’s not so impossible in the UK – and it might just be the most beautiful place you can visit. 

Time Out’s writers and editors have been seeking out some of Britain’s most beautiful places, and landed on a fairytale island off the coast of Cornwall for the number two spot. St Michael’s Mount’s craggy rocks lead up to green grasses and winding paths, finally reaching a castle at its peak. It’s no wonder it made the list. 

Time Out writer India Lawrence has described it as ‘the stuff of fairytales’. She wrote: ‘Built in 1135 AD, this magical spot is the site of numerous Cornish legends and myths, including miracles, angelic visitations, mermaids and giants. It’s also steeped in history, and over the centuries this former monastery has witnessed Norman conquests, the Spanish Armada, World War II sieges and even a tsunami.’

There’s just one catch – St Michael’s can only be reached at certain times of day. Depending on the tide, you can take a leisurely walk by seaweed-covered cobblestone causeway to the island, or hop on a boat to make it there at high tide. There’s only a four-window each day when St Michael’s Mount is reachable, so it’s important to time your journey right.

The Cornish island is not quite devoid of civilisation – in fact, around 30 residents live there year-round. As a National Trust property, there’s plenty to see and do, including touring the castle, an art gallery, shops and cafes. 

And once you’ve explored the island, the south of Cornwall has its own itinerary of activities for you to fulfil. In fact, it’s possible to combine the trip with a hike of the South West coastal path to nearby Penzance. Sounds like a holiday well spent.
