National Cinema Day, the annual celebration of UK cinemas with tickets as low as £4, returns this year after a year-long hiatus. And this time, it’s bigger and better as the National Cinema Weekend.
The two-day weekend takes place on September 5-6 with over 530 UK cinemas participating so far. The cinemas are ready to offer a varied programme ranging from major blockbusters to indie picks and cult classics.
The event first began as National Cinema Day in 2022 when it was launched by the cross-industry body Cinema First.
Achieving 1.46 million admissions for its inaugural edition and 1.56 million admissions a year later, National Cinema Day’s objective has been to celebrate the big screen experience and thank the country’s filmgoers with discounted screenings.
While it was put on hold in 2025, Cinema First has relaunched the annual celebration as National Cinema Weekend. Philip Clapp, the Director of Cinema First, believes that an extended weekend format can give cinema-goers ‘greater flexibility to plan their visits, and the opportunity to watch the widest possible range of films, suiting all tastes’.
In a summer marked by record-breaking attendance for big-screen spectacles like The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it seems apt for National Cinema Day to expand its scope.
