Pick up a gorgeous gourd for spooky season at these excellent pumpkin-picking spots, as chosen by the AA

Once, buying a pumpkin was a quick afterthought during your mid-October supermarket shop. Stick one in your trolley, carve a silly face on it, job done. But now, picking a pumpkin is a whole autumnal day out in itself, with tractor rides, marshmallow-toasting, costumed performers, spooky walks... if you’re not careful, you’ll be having so much fun you’ll forget to actually choose a giant orange squash to bring home.
Up and down the UK, new attractions have sprung up to cater to the growing appetite for pumpkin-picking fun. But which ones offer gourd-geous autumnal days out, and which ones are a muddy disappointment? The AA doesn’t want anyone to make a wasted journey, so it’s assembled a list of the very best. To do so, it analysed patches all across the country, assessing whether they grew their pumpkins on site (many don’t), entry prices, Google reviews, and Instagrammability (for such are the times we live in).
With over 100,000 pumpkins to choose from, all grown on the farm, this annual extravaganza is a pumpkin picker’s paradise. Here’s our full rundown of the entertainment on offer, which includes a bale mountain to climb, a pumpkin-firing cannon, a haunted house, and tons more ludicrous Halloween fun.
This Elizabethan hall is teeming with spooky historic atmosphere, making it the perfect backdrop to your Halloween adventure. And to seal the deal, they’ve added an eerie walk through the Kitchen Garden, and a creepy quest to track down golden-bottom pumpkins.
This attraction lures in families all year round with its fantastic, themed adventure playgrounds. But when Halloween creeps round, there's an added bonus. You can climb on a tractor and head right into the fields to select your own pumpkin, before settling in for a day of autumnal fun. There’s a pumpkin sling shot, wand-making sessions, a friendly roving scarecrow, and even a Dutch Barn to shelter in if the weather takes a turn.
