This spellbinding sculpture garden is one of the UK’s most unmissable art attractions – and it’s now open in the winter months

It’s got installations by Anish Kapoor and Tracey Emin, and an artwork that you can actually swim in – Jupiter Artland is one of Time Out’s

The UK has an abundance of art. Whether you’re in Sussex, Salford, Cardiff or Cornwall, there’s likely to be somewhere nearby that houses a glorious collection of paintings, ceramics, sketches or sculptures. So, Time Out’s writers and editors were spoiled for choice when putting together our guide to the greatest art galleries in the country.

In the end, we landed on 16 magnificent art venues and over the last month, we’ve been spotlighting each of them from the Whitworth in Manchester to the MAC in Belfast. Now, it’s time to spotlight number eight in the ranking. It’s 10 miles from Edinburgh, it’s entirely outdoors and it’s like Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland come to life. Time Out’s eighth best gallery in the UK is Scottish sculpture garden Jupiter Artland.

Across 120 luscious acres, Jupiter Artland is home to dozens of magnificent installations by the likes of Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley and more. A 12-metre-tall orchid called ‘Love Bomb’ by Marc Quinn sits against the backdrop of the Pentland Hills; a fountain made of giant spiralling shells by Laura Aldridge called ‘A Comic Reset’ is in front of the guesthouse and a topsy-turvy abandoned toy shop by Scottish artist Rachel Maclean hides in the woodland.

This is only the second year ever that Jupiter Artland will stay open during the autumn and winter (although it’s closed through January). During that time, it’s hosting a major exhibition from Turner Prize winner Tai Shani. M.I.A.S.M.A. is the sculpture park’s first international co-commission and reimagines the Ancient Greek tragedy Antigone for our current times. It’ll be at Jupiter Artland until early 2027.

Remember to pack your bathing suit – as far as we know, this is the only gallery in the UK with a piece of artwork you can actually swim in. Joana Vasconcelos’ ‘Gateway’ is a heated pool made up of more than 11,000 hand-painted Portuguese tiles that create a bright, psychedelic pattern. Public bathing sessions allow up to 12 guests to enjoy the pool for up to an hour. Visitors can also take a dip in the lake at the centre of Charles Jencks’ spectacular landform ‘Cells of Life’.

Oh, did we mention you can also stay the night here? The Artist House at Jupiter Artland is available for bookings of up to six guests. It’s got hot underfloor heating, a wood-burner, a Swedish wood-fired outdoor tub and its own orchard. Guests also get full access to the Artland and the opportunity for a private swimming session. Take a closer look here.
