It’s not every day that Tokyoites get to welcome a brand new fireworks festival in the heart of the city – well, sort of. The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival will see fireworks launched from the sea off Harumi Pier against the backdrop of Tokyo Bay and Rainbow Bridge – and this ultra-picturesque pyrotechnics show is coming back from an 11-year hiatus this October.
Taking place on October 24 from 5.30pm to 7pm, the fiery fiesta will see 12,000 fireworks launched over the course of 90 minutes, commemorating 80 years since the founding of the waterfront wards of Chuo and Minato. The annual festival had been suspended indefinitely since 2016 due to the development of the athletes’ village for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics at the nearby Harumi Wharf. But now the two wards have decided to bring the festivities back to mark their anniversaries by co-hosting the event.
Viewing seats are secured for over 100,000 people across a total of 15 locations in Chuo, Minato and Koto wards, with prices ranging from ¥5,000 to ¥10,000 per seat depending on the seat type and venue. Viewing from the roadside and other public areas is, unfortunately, frowned upon.
Many of the official viewing spots, including Harumi Pier Park, Hinode Pier, Toyosu Gururi Park and Odaiba Marine Park, offer priority access to local ward residents. General admission tickets for these areas are now on sale, but availability is limited and prices start from ¥5,000, so be sure to grab yours quick while supplies last.
For a cheaper and hassle-free way to enjoy the fireworks, head slightly farther away and take in the show from above, with Tokyo Tower and Roppongi Hills offering distant but impressive views. Or, for a more luxurious experience, book a yakatabune houseboat, with packages starting from ¥70,000 per person.
