A beautiful, traditional Japanese garden that was laid out by a silk merchant in 1906. When religious relics were being torn down as religion fell from official favour in the Meiji era, the local merchant decided to save the treasures from the bulldozer, importing them from across Japan. The grounds now house a three-storey pagoda from Kyoto, and a feudal lord’s residence among many other priceless structures. The garden is open in the evening during cherry-blossom season (April) and for Moon Viewing (September).

Sankeien Moon-Viewing

The annual moon-viewing event Kangetsukai at Yokohama Sankeien Garden is returning this September to coincide with the garden's Mid-Autumn Festival. This sprawling park is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Happening from September 25 to September 29, the event will feature free performances of traditional musical instruments such as satsuma biwa (September 25, 6.15pm-8pm), gagaku (Sep 26 6pm-8pm), koto (September 29, 6pm-8pm) and more at the newly renovated Rinshunkaku villa. Time your visit to coincide with the full moon on September 27 for the best views. The event is free but you'll need a park admission ticket (¥900).
