If you want a zero-stress, foolproof way to kick off your day, head straight to Scenic World in Katoomba. If you’re driving, park at Scenic World, or get the train to Katoomba or Leura and hop on the bus to Scenic World. Or, if you’re flying into Western Sydney Airport, shuttle over to Penrith Station, hop on the Blue Mountains Line and bus it the rest of the way.
First up, ground yourself in the ancient landscape with the Buunyal Experiences. Lock in the 30-minute Buunyal Yarn – an intimate chat with an Indigenous guide about traditional lore, native plants and local culture. Or if you want to go all-out, the roughly three-hour Buunyal Tour offers a guided deep dive across the entire site. And a heads up, spots sell out fast, so be sure to book ahead.
Make the most of your day pass with unlimited rides on the Scenic Railway – the steepest passenger railway on the planet – as it journeys down into the Jamison Valley rainforest, or the Scenic Skyway and Cableway as they soar along and between cliffs.
Enjoy lunch at the EATS270 restaurant (named after the staggering height of the Skyway above the rainforest) or Terrace Café, both boasting panoramic views of the Jamison Valley and Three Sisters. The seasonal menu celebrates native ingredients and hearty classics. Wash it down with a cold local craft beer from Mountain Culture, a glass of Dryridge Estate wine, a crisp Hillbilly Cider or try Blue Mountains Gin Factory and Katoomba Brewing Company’s new Ginger Devil. And before you charge off for the rest of the day, fuel up on a coffee from local roasters Cassiopeia.
If you fancy walking off lunch, wander a section of the Grand Cliff Top Walk towards Echo Point (don't panic, it’s only around 30 minutes one-way). For more of a leg workout, tackle the historic Furber Stairs down into the valley, then cheat on the way back up by riding Scenic World’s Railway. When golden hour hits, catching the sunset at Cahill’s Lookout or Narrow Neck is always a good idea.
No romantic day trip is complete without sharing a meal and a drink to round out the day. Head into Katoomba for dinner at local joints like Basil Nut, Pho Moi or 8 Things, and if you’re up for one last stop, hit up the Blue Mountains Gin Company for a quick tour and a floral tipple. If you prefer to end your day with some R&R, head to Blackheath to soak in the Japanese-inspired Aqua Ignis bathhouse, then cap off the night with a cocktail at Side B Vinyl Bar or Frankie & Mo’s.
