Deciding where to buy a home, choosing the perfect place to go for a weekend away, or weighing up whether or not to escape the city for good and move to the country – these are all valid topics of conversations. But the really pressing question that’s lighting up dinner tables across the Harbour City is this: if we get a dog, what are we calling them? Do you go for a classic, like Goldie or Lucky, or treat them like a human from the start? Think John, George or Lucy. According to Pet Insurance Australia’s latest data drop, it seems Sydneysiders are doing a bit of both. The researchers at the company have just released the official list of the top 10 female and male dog names in the state for 2025 – and you can check if your pup’s name is on the list.

Across the nation, Luna reigns supreme as the top female dog name – but it’s not just an Aussie thing. New data reveals it’s also the current number one pick in the United States and the United Kingdom. Luna is followed by other cutesy names like Coco and Daisy (which came in second and third place respectively in Victoria, and third and second place on the national list). Meanwhile, Ruby and Bella jumped from ninth and tenth place last year to join the top five on the national and NSW-specific lists.

Although Aussies continue to source inspiration from movies and children’s television shows, Nala slipped from fourth place to sixth on the national list, and seventh on the NSW-focused list. However, we predict it will soar back up the charts once The Lion King musical returns to Australia in 2026. The only new name to crack this year’s female top ten is Willow, which bumped Molly out of the national list (though Molly still made the NSW list, ranking as the eighth most popular name for female doggies in the state).

As for males, Teddy and Milo lead the pack for yet another year, followed by popular human-esque names like Leo, Alfie, Archie and Charlie. Meanwhile, Henry and Hugo got the boot from the top ten and have been replaced by Murphy, Buddy and Max.
