Parramatta’s long-awaited new arts and culture hub finally has an opening date, and from what we can tell, it’s bringing a whole lot more than exhibitions to Western Syd. Powerhouse Parramatta will officially open to the public on Saturday, November 7, 2026 – one of the biggest cultural projects Australia has seen since the Sydney Opera House. It’s been a long time in the works, so we’re pretty keen to see what comes next. Here’s what we know so far.

Set on the banks of the Parramatta River, the $915 million museum is being billed as a major new landmark for Western Sydney – the area’s first-ever state cultural institution. When it opens in early November, visitors will be able to explore five major exhibitions featuring more than 3,000 objects, with most exhibitions completely free to explore.

For a little context, Powerhouse Parramatta is a $915 million museum project – described by Powerhouse CEO Lisa Havilah as “a museum built for the future, where local knowledge meets global perspectives.”

From what we know so far, that checks out. Powerhouse’s existing museums (especially the one under renovation in Ultimo) have consistently set the bar for out-of-the-box cultural projects in Sydney, and their events programming (including the beloved summer series Sunset Variations) is pretty unparalleled in the Harbour City. According to Lisa Havilah, at the Parramatta venue we’ll see that ethos carried through: “We are thrilled to be opening our doors this November with five world-class exhibitions and a program that is as bold and diverse as the communities it serves.”

Beyond the (v ambitious) exhibitions, the architecturally impressive venue (designed by Franco-Japanese architects Moreau Kusunoki alongside Australian firm Genton and a super impressive line-up of local creatives and designers) will feature a 200-seat demonstration kitchen; a rooftop terrace complete with a productive garden, observatory and sweeping views back towards the CBD; and 30 residential studios designed to host artists, researchers and scientists from around the world.

For Parramatta, the arrival of the museum represents a mega transformation of the riverfront and a big new cultural drawcard for the city. And with free entry to the museum and most exhibitions, it’s set to become a pretty compelling weekend spot for Sydneysiders from all across town – whether you’re coming for the art, the architecture or a peek around the rooftop garden.

The first few exhibitions are setting the bar for what we can expect from Powerhouse Parramatta over the next few years. The first, Task Eternal, will explore humanity’s enduring obsession with defying gravity and taking to the skies. One of its centrepieces is the historic Qantas Avro 504K aircraft, with the exhibition delving into the intersections of design, innovation and technology.

If you’ve ever spent a suspiciously long amount of time wandering around Westfield, the newly announced The Mall might be the exhibition you’re most sold on. Spanning two storeys, the exhibition will unpack the history, evolution and cultural influence of the shopping mall – featuring more than 560 objects from the Powerhouse collection, alongside more than 280 loans, pieces of ephemera and personal stories gathered from the local community. According to the Powerhouse team, we can expect a gloriously eclectic mix of architecture, fashion, technology, engineering and design – including rare archives from Australian brands including Le Specs, Hot Tuna, Mambo, Globe, Crumpler, Above the Clouds and Song for the Mute. The fact that this exhibition will tie in with one of the biggest openings in Western Sydney’s recent history is crucial – it’s here (Blacktown, specifically) where the first large-scale, transport-integrated Westfield shopping centre opened way back in 1959, before the company expanded from Australia into the US, UK, New Zealand and Italy.

Powerhouse Parramatta will open on Saturday, November 7, 2026. You can keep tabs over here.
