Beautiful Byron Bay is one of Australia’s most popular – and famous – holiday destinations for good reason. But if you’re craving gin-clear water, breezy beach days and top-notch eats without the crowds, we’ve got you covered. These five gorgeous NSW towns offer all the charm of Byron, with more room to stretch out. Surfboard encouraged.

South West Rocks

Up for a solid road trip? Forget the name and drive five hours north from Sydney to South West Rocks – a slice of laid-back paradise with golden beaches, a barefoot vibe and a small-town feel. For a bit of history, check out Trial Bay Gaol, and be sure to visit Smoky Cape Lighthouse for grid-worthy views. Popular swimming spot Horseshoe Bay has a big grassy patch, perfect for fish and chips and ice creams post-dip.

Time Out tip: With calm, clear and warm waters, Trial Bay Gaol Beach is one of our favourite places for a swim. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it.

Yamba

Found on the northern NSW coast, around a seven-hour drive from Sydney, Yamba is like Byron’s cheeky little brother. Home to cracking surf beaches, a historic lighthouse, ace dining options and dolphins, this small town is gaining popularity – so get here before the secret’s out. Stroll down to the Yamba River Markets for farm-fresh produce, then lace up and spend a day exploring Yuraygir National Park. Looking for accommodation? The Surf Yamba and Il Delfino are our picks.

Time Out tip: When it’s drink o’clock, visit Yamba Distilling Co. The warehouse-style space opens onto a sunny lawn – an ideal spot to enjoy a paddle of locally made gin or a cocktail.

Pottsville

Charming, relaxed and bloody beautiful, Pottsville is a top choice for your next summer holiday. Just over an eight-hour drive from Sydney, the idyllic coastal town is the perfect place to get off your phone and into your latest page-turner. The calm, glassy waters of Mooball Creek make it a favourite spot for kayaking and family fun. You can surf the waves at nearby Cabarita, then jump on your bike and ride the Tweed Coast Cycleway to Kingscliff. Cool off with a beer at the surf club before the journey back.

Time Out tip: Whatever you do, make a booking at Pipit – Pottsville’s fine-dining gem that captures the spirit and beauty of the Northern Rivers, and a nominee in Time Out Sydney’s Food & Drink Awards 2025 for Best Destination Venue.

Gerringong

With lush, rolling green hills, a perfect blue sea and pumping surf, Gerringong is a dream South Coast destination. And at around a two-hour drive from Sydney, it’s also an easy weekend option. Put your out-of-office on, play a round at Gerringong Golf Club, walk the picturesque Gerringong to Kiama Coastal Walk, and head to Gerringong Headland for sweeping views.

Time Out tip: Be sure to visit Gerringong Boat Harbour Rock Pool – a magical swimming spot tucked around the corner from the boat ramp.

Mollymook

A three-hour drive south of Sydney, Mollymook has everything you want for an easy-breezy summer holiday: beaches, hikes, restaurants, surfing and sunsets. Beachside Bistro is a casual go-to for parmys, burgers and beers overlooking the beach. Accommodation-wise, Bannisters by the Sea is iconic for a reason, while Bannisters Pavilion is a more affordable alternative.

Time Out tip: Bring your board and skip the main beach – instead, drive to Narrawallee Beach for rolling waves. For a special treat, book lunch or dinner at Rick Stein at Bannisters and go for the ocean-fresh sashimi platter or the Sri Lankan-style curry.
