Review
There’s something particularly satisfying about returning to a warm, cosy room after a full day of physical exertion in the snow. That was probably my favourite part of staying at Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort: it gave me the feeling of having an alpine adventure without sacrificing the comforts that make a winter getaway feel like a holiday.
Set against the backdrop of the Snowy Mountains region, Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort is surrounded by mountains, bushland and the picturesque Lake Crackenback. It’s close enough to the ski fields to make a day on the slopes easy, yet far enough removed to escape the busier atmosphere of the mountain villages.
I spent my stay exploring the resort, enjoying the food, taking in the views from my balcony and, of course, making the most of being so close to the ski fields. By the end of the trip, it was easy to see why Crackenback makes such a good base for exploring the region.
The main appeal of Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort is its location and the sense of space that comes with it. Rather than feeling like you're simply sleeping over between ski days, the resort gives you plenty of reasons to stay put.
The setting is distinctly alpine, with the lake and surrounding mountains creating a peaceful backdrop. There’s a lovely feeling of being surrounded by nature, particularly in winter when the landscape takes on that quintessential Snowy Mountains atmosphere: all clarified light and crisp mountain air.
It also works well for different types of trips: skiers and snowboarders can use it as a base for exploring Thredbo and Perisher, while those looking for a more relaxed getaway can spend their days enjoying the resort's facilities.
For me, it was the balance between activity and relaxation that stood out. You could spend the morning skiing, return for a warm shower and a meal, then spend the afternoon doing very little other than enjoying the scenery.
My room was exactly what I wanted after a day on the slopes: warm, comfortable and genuinely cosy.
There was plenty of room to settle in and relax, rather than feeling like you had to spend all your time out exploring. After skiing, I loved being able to come back, get comfortable, light a fire and properly unwind.
The balcony was a particular highlight. Looking out over the lake gave the room an extra sense of calm and made it easy to appreciate the location without leaving my room.
It’s the kind of accommodation where the little details become more noticeable after a long day outside.
If you're booking specifically for a snow trip, I’d recommend prioritising a room with a lake view. Having that scenery outside your window really adds to the experience.
After hours on the slopes, dinner becomes a pretty important part of the day, and the restaurant at Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort didn't disappoint.
The Cuisine menu leaned into the sort of winter-warmer dishes that feel right at home in an alpine setting, and the lamb shanks were, without question, my standout. They were the best meal of my stay and exactly what I wanted after a day in the snow: hearty, warming and satisfying.
We dined alongside a lovely musician, whose soothing tunes made it feel like we were truly on holiday.
The resort's General Store is also worth a visit. I browsed the selection of goodies and gifts, particularly because it offered an opportunity to pick up something local to take home. The selection of beautiful local wines was another highlight and made the store feel like more than just somewhere to grab the essentials.
It’s a useful little stop whether you need something for your room, a snack, a treat, a gift or a bottle of something stronger to fight the winter chill!
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly and made to feel comfortable. The service was friendly and efficient.
There’s something especially valuable about arriving somewhere you can immediately switch off, and the warm welcome we received helped create that feeling from the moment we walked in.
Throughout the stay, the staff added to the overall experience and made the resort feel friendly rather than impersonal. It was a small but important part of what made the stay memorable.
One of the biggest surprises was just how much there is to do without needing to get in the car. Activities sit practically on the doorstep, meaning you could easily fill an entire day at the resort. There’s archery, a nine-hole golf course, tennis and swimming, as well as a sauna for warming up and relaxing afterwards.
For a winter stay, having these options is particularly useful. Not every day has to revolve around skiing, especially when Australian snowfall can be hit or miss, and the resort makes it easy to build a day around other activities.
I could easily imagine spending a morning on the slopes, coming back for lunch, and then heading out for a swim or sauna before dinner. It gives the resort a more rounded holiday feel rather than making it solely about snow sports.
Crackenback is a fantastic base if you want to explore the Snowy Mountains while staying somewhere peaceful.
One of the biggest practical advantages is how close the resort is to both Thredbo and the Ski Tube. Thredbo is approximately a 15-minute drive away, making it easy to head out for a day of skiing or snowboarding. The Bullocks Flat Ski Tube terminal is only a few minutes away by car, providing easy access to Perisher.
That location gives you the best of both worlds: you’re close enough to the major ski destinations that getting to the slopes is straightforward, but far enough away to enjoy a quieter evening back at the resort, with Jindabyne sitting around 25 minutes away via car.
Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort is the sort of place that makes you want to slow down.
For a snow trip, I loved having somewhere warm and comfortable to return to after a day on the slopes, particularly with the lake views, cosy room and the restaurant serving delicious food. The lamb shanks remain my standout meal, while the General Store was a lovely touch for picking up local goodies, gifts and wine.
The friendly staff also made a difference, creating a warm welcome from the beginning of the stay.
I’d particularly recommend Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort for couples, families or groups looking for a Snowy Mountains escape that offers more than simply ski-in, ski-out convenience. Book a lake-view room if you can, make time for the resort facilities, and don't be afraid to dedicate a day to exploring what's available right on the property.
Most importantly, don't underestimate the pleasure of coming back from a cold day on the slopes, settling into a warm room, looking out over the lake and knowing dinner is waiting downstairs. For me, that was what made Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort feel like more than just a place to stay – it was part of the holiday itself.
