Heading on a road trip and want to stop off somewhere cool for a leg stretch or a bite to eat? Here are some of the best pitstops South African road users can visit.

"It's not about the destination, but the journey..."

Or something like that.

Try telling that to screaming kids who, for the 303rd time in an hour, believe asking, "Are we there yet?" is going to make the car instantly teleport to the destination.

Ok, clearly you can see this is coming from a place of trauma, but I digress.

We do love a road trip in South Africa. Apart from the natural beauty that is on offer while driving for holiday, work or family reasons, there is something therapeutic about being on the open road, away from the craziness of the big city and daily life.

Part of that therapeutic journey involves stopping off on the side of the road to discover something cool, experience something different or chow down on something delicious.

All major routes in South Africa have these little spots for you to stretch those legs and refuel yourself (and your vehicle). From standard petrol stations with a good old Wimpy to a pitstop that has wild animals roaming around (yes, that place exists in Mpumalanga), I've put together a list for your next road trip along the open roads of stunning Mzansi, so check it out below.

Time Out Tip: This one goes without saying, but please never drink and drive. Ever. We see far too many road fatalities in South Africa as a result of people having a few drinks and hitting the road. We're all for having a good time, it's what we promote at Time Out South Africa, but never should you ever drink and drive. Have fun responsibly, always.

Time to stretch those legs...

Oude Post Bistro - N2, Western Cape

Oude Post Bistro, located just outside Swellendam on the N2, is the kind of pitstop you go back to again, again, and again. Why? Their incredible roosterkoek, of course! This hugely popular pitstop for those travelling from Cape Town up the Garden Route has become world famous for their roosterkoek, which is a traditional bread filled with whatever your heart desires - from simple butter and jam to chicken mayonaise and even steak. You simply have to give one a try when next in the area.

How to get there:

Alzu Petroport - N4, Mpumalanga

Alzu Petroport has become a firm favourite for those heading to the southern region of the Kruger National Park, Mozambique, and the Lowveld along the N4 from Gauteng. Not only does it provide everything you could want from a pitstop - petrol, takeaways, restaurants, and other refreshments, it is also home to a mini game reserve, with rhinos, buffalo, and other wildlife roaming around a central waterhole below the complex.

Millys - N4, Mpumalanga

Another favourite pitstop along the N4 is Millys. Known for their trout products, Millys was the main pitstop before Alzu came along. However, Millys is still very much a favourite among travellers of this route and provides all you need as a road user looking for refueling and refreshment. Set against a lake and surrounded by rolling green hills, it's natural beauty is just as much a drawcard as their trout pie is.

How to get there:

Peregrine Farm Stall - N2, Western Cape

Do yourself a favour - get a pie from Peregrine Farm Stall near Grabouw. They are simply delicious, and the farm stall where the pies are sold is equally as impressive, with a huge selection of baked goods and other typical South African delicacies on offer. This is a regular pitstop for those exploring the Overberg region from Cape Town and gets quite busy on weekends, but stretching your legs here will not leave you disappointed.

The Big Pineapple - R67, Eastern Cape

While you won't find SpongeBob at this pineapple, what you will find is a history lesson on the pineapple industry - and the perfect photo op to say, "Yeah, I've seen a massive pineapple in the flesh." Located just outside Bathurst on the R67 to Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, this famous landmark draws many a curious visitor each year.

How to get there:

Blueberry Cafe - R103, KwaZulu-Natal

If you find yourself travelling through the KZN Midlands, do yourself a favour and make a stop at Blueberry Cafe. Sandwiched between the N3 and the R103 in Nottingham Road, this little gem serves up the most delicious food, but the real drawcard is the incredble views on offer of the expansive farmlands and Drakensberg mountains. A plus is that the restaurant does things sustainably, so you know whatever you choose to enjoy was prepared the right way.

Ronnie's Sex Shop - R62, Western Cape

No, it is not that type of shop; the name comes from friends playing the fool with their mate Ronnie. What it really is, is a pitstop along the R62 that serves drinks and food for weary travellers, but, understandly, the name has created a buzz over the years and the perfect photo op below the painted signage.

Incedently, the pitstop is actually up for sale at the moment, and you can read about why and so much more in this feature written by Time Out Cape Town's City Expert, Richard Holmes.

How to get there:

Tsitsikamma Petroport - N2, Western Cape

Fancy a walk over a bridge that is crazy high above a river after refuelling your car and belly? Well, the Tsitsikamma Petroport is the place for you. Located next to the Stormsriver Bridge on the N2, while this pitstop has all you need as a traveller, the true excitement comes when you walk a bit further down the road and cross the bridge. But be warned, it is HIGH and not for those who are afraid of heghts.
